Fastest CF reader?
I can't stand the upload speed of the 4GB microdrive... I was if anyone has a good source to which CF card reader is the fastest for writing... I'm gonna have to stick it in there to fill all 4 gigs because at the current rate, it's taking 2 mins / 6 megs or something and it's not going to work...

Unless someone out there knows how to upload files a bit faster or can tell me how to use Active Link 3.7 a bit better I guess I have to buy me a card reader

Any suggestions welcome...

I believe the limitation is the speed of the Microdrive. With a USB reader, the ower the microdrive uses is only fast enough to read and write at a slower speed. CF connections transfer pwer more efficiently than USB. That is what I think is the problem anyway, someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

All I know is, the microdrive is also found on the muvo2 and the iPod mini... Let me say that at 3 mins / song (6 megs) they won't sell any if at all...

I know there is a faster way to transfer things onto the microdrive than the stupid Active sync and slow ol iPaq...

I read a review about getting a card reader, but don't know what is a good brand to look at... (if any makes a difference)

You should look for a card reader that supports USB 2.0, but you will also have to have a USB 2.0 port on your computer to get the full benefit of USB 2.0 speed. If your PC has a PC Card slot (like a notebook computer), you might try just using a PC Card CF adapter, depending on what OS or version of Windows you are using, you may need to install a driver.

Yes, make sue the card reader is USB 2.0...it has transfers speeds 40x higher than USB Compliant 1.1 ports. Your USB port on the computer also has to ber USB2.0, or you will be stuck at the USB1.1 speeds. It should at least help.

Please keep in mind that the 40X increase of USB 2.0 over USB 1.1 is a specification only, and never really comes out that way. In general, USB 2.0 will be significantly faster than 1.1, but is only 5-10X faster. A Firewire/P1394 port is theoretically slower than USB 2.0 (400Mb/s (firewire) vs. 480Mb/s (USB 2.0)), but in any real world situation, firewire devices are far faster.

A better reason for going with USB 2.0, just in my opinion, is that USB 2.0 hubs are required to re-clock/re-sync/re-generate all the signals, which is where a lot of USB 1.1 hubs are really lacking.

Yeah thanks for the info guys!! My computer has enough USB 2.0 ports to power a house, so no worries there... I'm definately picking up a card reader now!!

I was also thinking about getting a bluetooth port since I got myself an extended battery and can't use the regular cradle... The fastest one I saw on ebay was 2.4ghz however I know thats just the frequency... How fast are bluetooth things compared to the cradle?

The maximum speed for bluetooth is 723kbps, which is the same for all BT 1.1 devices. What's more important and will also affect effective speed is the Class of the BT radio. Be sure to get a Class 1 BT port (dongle), which has a range specification of 100m vs Class 2 BT devices which have a range of 10m. The power of the radio affects the transmission speed the further the BT devices are apart.

Before we move onto the question I have below, what exactly IS the best way to dock / sync your ipaq to the PC?

Is that generally faster than the dock that originally came with the 2215? I must say being under 1Mb / sec is pretty harsh... Still I would perfer wireless docking leaving my charger intact than to have strip my battery just to sit it on the dock...

I got myself a SanDisk 8 in 1 card reader at Best Buy shortly after reading some reviews... I must say it went from 3 min / 6 megs to 3 seconds... I copied 2.68 gigs of songs in 15 - 20 mins... A MUST GET for anyone using microdrives... (Also pick yourself up a 2000mah Mugen battery or else you'd have about 5 - 6 hours of screenless MP3 playing)
