check this product out....USB IRDA for desktop
Hi everyone.

I'm looking for a way to transfer files quickly to the pda from just about any computer... My question is, will this device work? Anyone seen it?

STARTECH.COM
StarTech.com USB2IR - Infrared adapter - USB
mfg part # (usb2ir)

According to what i read, its an IRDA port that you can just plug into any PC and done- It has IR.

Im thinking this might work as some type of key-chain port that i can plug into my desktop at work, or a friends computer, and send what ever data data to my pda... Similar to pluging in a usb flash drive.

what do you think? will this work?

No reason it shouldn't
The only issue I can think of is that USB ports are not exactly always placed well for IR. The PC I'm on now has 2 USB ports in the back - almost completely inaccessible. It also has two USB ports in the front facing down at about a 60 degree angle. What was Dell thinking? Maybe consider getting a USB extension cable? Hmmm. Maybe I'll do that. Too bad someone doesn't make a device like this with a 2 foot cable attached... oh that would be a regular IR device!

Anybody know if that requires extra drivers for 2000/XP? I had a linksys nic that needed a driver. That gets annoying.

I have a different model of USB IR adapter (I'll have to check the brand when I get home) that came with an extension cable about 3 feet in length. If I am ever having issues syncing, I just go to the IR adapter that works every time with every device I own. I received this with a Handheld PC I bought and will never let this handy accessory go.

Mikey, according to tech support, XP will automaticly detect and use it. No drivers needed.

Looks like another gadget added to my tech shopping list.
