to buy or not to buy?
Hi Folks
with rumor that there would be no more Axims or traditional PDAs by HP , do you think I should get a PDA while they are available?
second, what is the advantage to wm5? most softwares i see are compatible with older OS

Thanks for your thoughts and comments!
Alex

Hi Scientist. I didn't know Dell wasn't going to be making Axims any longer.

HP definietly seems to be getting out of the PDA market, the high end PDA market for sure. To answer you question anout whether to get one now I have to ask, what do you want to be able to do with a PDA? That can make a difference on recommendations.

The main advantage to WM5 is "persistant storage". In earler pocket PC OS versions, programs are stored in volatile RAM. If your batter should drain for any reason, you would loose all your data. In WM5 all the programs and data are stored in ROM, so that if you loose battery power or drain the battery, you don't loose the data (like on a cell phone for example). There are also some upgrades to the Pocket Office software apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Beyond that, the advantages are subjective. It's newer, but not necessarily better.

Hi Scientist, I replied to your PM. Check out this video review for one of the UMPCs about to hit the streets later this summer/fall.
SD Card that works!

It's bigger than a PDA and won't fit in a shirt pocket, but I bet it could fit in a lab coat pocket and you would have full Windows XP functioanlity.

If you have some money saved for something, make it a PPC! You should be able to get a good one off Dell for about $250. If you take public transportation, it is one of the best companions you can have, also nothing beats the endless possibilities of PPC applications

There are rumors that the world is run by Lizards... whether you believe them is a different matter.

Dell are still busy selling Axims and will be for the forseeable future, (and I'd recommend getting the complete care warranty)

I'm sure others will not agree, but given the way I use my iPaq 4700 - primarily as a document/bookreader that goes with me everywhere - there is nothing better on the market to my knowledge. The UMPCs are not going to serve that role because of size/weight.

So, to answer your question, last month I bought a second 4700 to have as a backup in case my first one dies. Obviously, there are cost issues, by at this point the thought of life without my 4700 and its vivid 4" screen is hard to imagine.
