Socket Mobility 650 M ...
I have an Axim X3 and wanted to upgrade to an Axim X51v until I found out that DELL is no longer selling them. I've recently become aware of the Socket Mobility 650 M (SoMo 650 M) and was wondering if anyone has any information other than what one can read on line from either Socket or Dell, as Dell is marketing the device. Thank you in advance for any information or help on this subject.
Respectfully,
Robert Ackerfield

if I was buying one pda I wouldn't get one. As a consumer you can get better devices.
If I was buying 500 pdas them i's seriously consider it, as they are geared to that market

My main question about this PDA is whether or not it will be able to use SDHC cards? If anyone has any insights on that please post.
One not so obvious thing from the online docs. The M model has USB 2.0 host capability. No PDA's that I know of have this. I am anxious to try it out and see what kind of data rate I can get recording wav files to it.
Socket seems committed to support this pda for up to five years. Since they are heavily vested into pocket pc peripherals I am willing to take the chance that they are serious about that. Perhaps we will see SDHC added as a firmware update(?)
This is the only new pda that I know of that has a compact flash (CF) slot. My (prospective) customers are interested in a new pda that can host Core Sound's PDAudio device for digital audio capture.
Since the X51v is no longer available, this seems like the best alternative, minus the VGA screen.

acer, asus, mio and hp all seem to offer better value for consumers and the range of pocket pc phones also comes in at arround this price point.
however the somo has an semi rugged form factor and excellent corporate management tools. and a 5 year lifespan.
As live2496 says, lf it does every thing you want, and the price is ok for you, why not?

Yes it has SDHC support (ie: 4-8GB SD cards) & it will recieve a Windows Mobile 6 classic upgrade before September, according to their US representative.
It is one of the few devices that come close to X51v level so I say go and get it if the shoe fits. ;)

I recently purchased the SoMo 650m and I cannot seem to get it to recognize an SDHC 4gb card.

After posting I decided to contact Socket Mobile with the question to clear up any confusion. Below is the response I got back from Tech Support.
************************************************** ***************
Hello,
The SoMo 650 does NOT support SDHC cards.
SDHC cards are SD cards that are 4G or more in capacity. This capability was introduced in version 2.0 of the SD Specification. The SoMo650 is compliant with specification version 1.1, which only allows SD Cards less than 4G.
Best regards,
Mario

So for anyone viewing this thread do not purchase an SDHC card for your SoMo650 PDA it will not work.

There was apparently some misinformation early on about the USB host capability. It has USB host, but it is USB 1.1 only. And, you have to use the cradle to use USB host. (The thinking there in the design was that you should be plugged in to AC power when using the device as a host.)
