I have a friend that has had this PDA for a while (about seven years), but never used it (or rarely). Now, since a lot of us have PDA's, the person wants to start using it. It has the ActiveSync 3.* disk, and I do not know if the battery is still good. I am charging it right now. The PDA has been used for about one hour it's entire life.

What will I have to do to get it as up-to-date as it can get?

I have friends that have PC's, but they all use ActiveSync 4.2 or 4.5. Will it sync with 4.2 or 4.5? If not now, can it in the future, with a little help (from friends like y'all)?

If not, can the PDA be update without syncing it. Can the programs that it needs be put on by CAB files? It has a CF card slot.

If it needs a new battery, where can I find one for this PDA?

The person does not need it to do amazing things, but wants to use Word and read books on it (it comes with Microsoft Reader - do not know what version). That is all. Okay, maybe have some use of contacts and use the calendar, but nothing more than this.

Please help me, help this person. Thank you ahead of time.

maybe you'll have to change its battery, you could find something on ebay.
- Activesync: your device'd work with the latest version too
- CAB files : yes, you can install programs copyng them on a CF card. You can get cab files on freecabs.de or tryng to extract them from the original packages.

Well, I charged it up and it works well. It seems to hold a charge a long time, so maybe the battery wasn't affected too bad. We will see over time, I guess.

Just to make sure I understand you correctly. I can sync this HP Jornada 547 with a PC running ActiveSync 4.2 or 4.5 and it will sync with it - no problems? That is good to hear, if that is true. I will have to try that out.

Now, there is one other thing that may be a bigger problem (Software-wise). I am looking for a free Bible program that will run on this Jornada 547? It is running Window Mobile PocketPC 2000 and the CPU is a Hitachi SH3 with 133 MHz. I run Pocket e-Sword with my Axim (and I love it), but the earliest Operating System that they say it works with is PPC 2002. Does anyone have any suggestions?

By the way, I found a place that carries replacement parts for this PDA. Thank you.

Check the pocket pc freeware sites out there, i have some in my sig.

There is a lot of older freeware out there that was designed back in the ppc 2000/02 days. It should be good for ur device.

pdagold.com seems to have preserved a lot of good old freeware. Some of it being ancestors to todays shaeware.

IE: There is an old wisbar clone that only works on ppc2000, and its free.
