Thanks, but i just need the basic color device, above 100mhz, color screen, that can fit into your pocket and will hold SD cards. I have the x50v so i do not need anything other than the very basic. It also has to be sturdy, therefore im probably going to go for a Tungsten from palm.
I'd also suggest that your kids raise about $100 towards the cost of the PPC, even if it's through chores. They need to go into the PPC world as people with invested interest...not as kids that got a new toy.
I think the X30 HIGH fits the bill...in particular with the need for wi-fi and bluetooth...and the processing speed won't hurt, either. Or, perhaps just some X50 mids. That would also give them a lot of options.
Because of the immediate need for wi-fi, that's where I'd go. Otherwise, I'd tell you to go to Ebay and get 2 X5 advanced units with all the wrappings (Rhinoskin, keyboard, etc.) for about $150-$175 each and let that be a first device. It was also a very SOLID device that might survive an accidental drop a bit better than the X3, X30, or X50 series.

LOL trust me youdont need to tel me about hardware problems with the Zodiac. I have the analog drift issue and I have a couple stuck pixels :P . But I still love the thing. I was going to RMA my device the day tapwave died. And so I am stuck with it. That is why I am now looking for a new PDA. Thats what brought me here

Normally I would agree that the girls should earn their own but they've just gone thru Katrina in Mississippi with their real mom (I'm a step-mom) and this is a kind of relocation gift since they'll be living with us for some time now. They were expecting to get a ppc for the holidays, this will just be a suprise for them to get it now.
I tried to use those previously mentioned coupons last night but they were used up. I did however find two items of interest.
HP RX3115 - has BT and WIFI, 300 processor, I think 56mb memory
refurb for $209
Dell lowX50 refurb with CF WIFI - everyone knows the specs so I won't post them here $254
I'm leaning towards the Dell (of course). Much better unit IMHO.
We usually give them electronics for the holidays - digi-cams, dvd players, stuff like that - and they take very good care of them so I'm not overly concerned about the ppc.
Thanks everyone for helping me with this.

note to self: Think of something to put here.
The x30h is going to be pretty hard to find unless you do a Google search for For Sale forum posts. I didn't see any on eBay. Dell has the x30 Advanced Wireless ( not VGA ) for $261. You can get brand new x50lows for the $254 mentioned in the post above. This could be the better choice since they LOOK like your x50v. :) I wonder if you can fool 'em. :)
If you're leaning towards Dell, I would suggest you get at least one year of Complete Care on each unit, if buying new. Kids have a tendancy to drop stuff. :)
x30h would be very good but then I think its all worth it to get the x50v for the VGA screen... Yeah some games and apps hate it but once you become a power PPC user well 320x240 gets kinda small.
