looking for a PDA/Smart phone...
I currently own an hx2750 (and love it), but am thinking about switching over to a smart phone that "does it all." IMHO, Bill Gates was right, we will be moving to cell phones as our "do-it-all" device... I just want to move from 2 devices to one and have something that can call someone and organize my life.

I use Verizon Wireless which cuts back on my smart phone capability, but does anyone have any recommendations? I've seen the RIM Blackberry's and Palm Treo's, and they're quite intriguing, but if I had to pick between a Blackberry/Treo and iPaq I'd choose the latter.

Any suggestions?

Jason

Well Smartphones are nice but it won't give you a "do-it-all" device but close. In terms of moving from a Pocket PC you might want to look at a Pocket PC phone versus a Smartphone. Yeah, they are different.

well, what I really meant was a pocket PC phone, but from the looks of it, Verizon doesn't have much selection (so I assumed the best option was to settle with a "smart" phone). I've read reviews for the Samsung i700 and from the looks of it, the phone completely blows. Some people say the palm treo 650 is awesome and some say nearly half of their calls are dropped, so I may just wait it out until HP makes a safe move over to CDMA (or palm increases functionality).

I take it you have a Verizon account. Have you looked at the SX6000?

I couldn't locate this, what brand is it? All I found were "promise supertrak RAID controllers" under this model #, lol.

Go for the samsung SCH-I730

I730

It is the same size as the treo and has the same features as the XV-6600 plus wifi a faster processor, etc etc.

The XV-6600 and the SCH-i730 both have EV-DO capability for insanely fast access on the go too (the treo 650 and blackberry's do not)

and the SX6600 or SX66 or MDA III are the GSM versions of the XV-6600

No brainer if you have the cash - another vote for the Samsung i730. I have been considering switching to Verizon just to get this phone. In my view the only negative is that it comes with WM2003SE and not WM5.0. Hopefully the upgrade will be made available.

I have a Cingular contract and use a Treo 650. It is a great phone/pda but lacks Wifi and EVDO. I would recommend the Treo as a second choice. It is still the best integrated smart phone with a great form factor, great screen, great battery life and true one-handed operation.

The XV6600 (and its variants) is an option but personally I find it a bit too large for a convergence device. The Blackberry is good only if push e-mail is your top priority.

My 2 cents.

quick question though. I don't know much about the monthly pricing of owning a pocket pc phone, so what extra charges would I incur? I did a little research on EVDO, but still don't feel I know as much as I should. Is it basically the ability to access the internet from your laptop wherever your cell receives coverage (via hooking the phone up to the comp)? Also, I thought I remembered reading it was like $80 a month just for EVDO, but that may have been just with the modem card.

Data plans on the major cellular carriers are hopelessly complicated. With luck, as more and more people sign up for it, the plans will become simpler to understand and cheaper.

Unlimited EVDO data on verizon will set u back about $50/mnth. Sprint just entered the fray so hopefully the prices will drop some.

Unlimited GPRS/EDGE data on Cingular can be had for $20/mnth but beware the reps will try to force you to buy the PDA unlmited plan for around $40/mnth. I think T-Mobile has unlimited data for around $20/month as well.

Hope this helps clear things up.

what if I just want to keep the functionality of the phone, and use wifi for email updates? Also, do you think email/internet access on the PHONE (since EVDO is for computer hook up, right?) would be as high as $50 a month with verizon?

You can get EVDO on new EVDO capable phones like the i730. It is not just for laptops anymore and on Verizon it runs $50/month. Although, you don't HAVE to get EVDO for data. You can still use the older cellular technology and pay lower rates. Sprint rates are attractive if you want CDMA. Do a search on the carriers' websites for more info or HowardForums to get yourself up to speed on this stuff.

You don't need any data plan from your cellular carrier if you just plan on using Wifi for data. All you need is a Wifi hotspot.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
