Smartphone "poll"....
Since this is no longer ipaqhq.com (RIP) and it related to most EVERYTHING mobility now...

What smartphone do you have, what OS (if known) and Why?

I have a Treo650 (PalmOS) and the main reason I ended up selling my hx4700 for it...well...several reasons:

- I was never using my 4700 anymore.
- MS can't seem to provide syncing ability for Apple. (Palm does)
- My old cellphone went bad.

I was about to place my 4700 up for sale when I noticed someone wanting gto trade their Treo for a 4700. Took the jump and fell in love with the Treo. I've had Palm before and was actually wanting to go back, and this deal was exactly what I was looking for and never looked back.

I have an Audiovox SMT5600 smartphone, running Windows Mobile 2003.

I have it for a bunch of reasons:
-- For most daily uses, it's more convenient than carrying around a phone and my PocketPC
-- I like the Windows Mobile platform, especially when looking at development opportunities
-- The battery "clips" on my LG VX4400 were broken, which required me to secure the battery with a zip-tie around the phone
-- I wanted to drop Verizon service, as I was having a lot of signal problems after moving to Arkansas
-- I wanted to get Cingular due to the great coverage out here (and in Alabama), and we have Cingular Premiere available to us through work

I've had my SMT5600 for about 6 months now, and have had absolutely no problems out of it at all. The coverage is great through Cingular, calls are much better quality than I got on Verizon, and I have had only a couple of dropped calls. It provides enough functionality that I can ditch my PocketPC 90% of the time, and still be able to do all the things that I need.

I have a K-JAM and an SDA. If I had to pick one, I would pick the PPC as I just find it more flexible. But the SDA is a close second!

I use the Nokia 6680 which is a Symbian S60 OS-based handset. It integrates well with Outlook and has no discernable problems or issues compared with Windows Mobile or the PPC that I carry (iPAQ 4150). I have not given over to the 6680 completely, preferring some of the flexibilty of the PPC and its larger screen (a consideration when advancing through the years as the eyesight isn't what it used to be). But nonetheless, the Nokia 6680 does hold its own.

Previous to the 6680 I was using a Motorola A1000 which is about as PDA as you can get for a mobile phone. It worked just fine, but I found the touchscreen did not lend itself to the phone functions as well as I could handle. On the contrary, I find that the 6680's normal phone keypad works just fine to operate the Organiser functions of S60. So, for me, a smartphone (regardless of OS) with regular keypad works better than one with a touchscreen.

Can anyone te11 me what makes a smartphone smart?

It isn't the smartphone os as people would agree that Pocket pc phones are still smartphones.

It isn't the Windows mobile thing either, Palm, Symbian, Linux all power smartphones.

It isn't touch screens.. or cameras. Or flash cards.

I don't think it's outlook syncing or web browsing, or is it.

Does anyone have a decent definition of what is a smartphone?

Phone with a pretty good IQ level.

I believe it is simply a way to distinguish that it is an advanced phone, with features that are superiour to others. Also for some reason Smartphone term has been linked to Microsoft units, probably because they are more widely found then symbian or others. It should also have something to do with Hardware, not just the software, such as USB+SD+wifi+bt+etc..

I don't think that there is truly anything man-made that could be termed "Smart" in the true sense of the word. Smart implied intelligence, and we havent got that far along the route, yet.

My definition of a Smartphone would have to be a "phone" that has enhanced capabilities over and above what would be a basic telephone. I'd say that it would not be just simply a phone with a built in camera (cameraphone) as that is not particularly "smart" by any stretch of the use of the word. But if the phone had an OS that allowed one to not only use embedded applications but also add others of your choice then we are getting to the premise of a Smartphone.

In truth, there is nothing "smart" about it, no more than one would perhaps call a Personal Computer smart. Its actualy a pretty dumb piece of kit until OS and apps are added, and then its only as "smart" as the dummy working it

But for conventions sake, Smartphone, is that which we have all come to equate the term with, that being a handset that does a multiplicity of things through embedded and added applications software. That would then include Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux-based handsets.

I reckon that you could refer to the Sony Ericsson K750 as a Smartphone given its rather impressive specification.
  • Connectivity - to include Bluetooth, USB and Infra Red among others
  • Organiser - to include Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, PIM sync and more
  • Internet - to include Modem (PC/PDA connect), Wap 1.2.1 and Wap 2.0
  • Messaging - SMS, MMS and E-Mail
  • Java - allowing applications and games to be authored for the device

Much of this is becoming de-facto on a broad range of handsets and so the term Smarphone may well become ubiquitous for pretty much all handsets of the not-too-distant future.

To digress slightly; already, even the most basic handset does quite a bit more than the average user requires of it (i.e. anything more than phone calls and SMS generally). Yet very many will now not only take pictures but video shots as well which may then be transferred by MMS and E-mail.

Common handsets such as the Samsung D500 or the Motorola V3 have many of the features seen in Smartphones in terms of Organiser, Multimedia tasks and PIM synchronisation. Not so in terms of add in applications maybe. But how many do you know who make use of even 50% of even these handsets capabilities?

Apart from the Man Machine Interface (MMI) and screen size there is not that much to differentiate between a modern day mobile phone handset and what we come to expect of a PDA these days. Add in Windows Mobile, Symbian or Linux to the equation and the distinction blurs even further.

SMT5600.
I think what makes it "smart" is the much-smaller form factor. Personally, I would go with touchscreen and flip-out or slide-out kbd and a slightly larger size, but smaller than a PPC phone. I'm not crazy about the OSK, even though I use it daily.

Hmmm, I'm not there yet.
I am looking to get something a little older (for $ reasons).
I'm looking at Nokia 3620 and maybe an Ericsson (not sure which).

I am wondering, though, how well these are compared to an Axim; which doesn't have a phone at all; but I'm wondering if anyone gave up their Axim for a smartphone, particularly a little older of a unit?

I'll be looking to get something for < $100, off something like eBay, here, or HowardForums, and I think the 3620 is in that price range.
