HTC's response to iPhone

HTC lauds Apple iPhone, but won't mimic it | InfoWorld | News | 2007-01-12 | By Dan Nystedt, IDG News Service

HTC has not been in discussions with Microsoft over a Zune mobile phone.
The president of High Tech Computer (HTC), the world's largest maker of Microsoft Windows mobile phones, thinks Apple's new iPhone is "pretty innovative," but his company has no plans to put out a similar product.

Zune Phone? The last thing I'd want is a Zune Phone. I already have a Windows Mobile with 1GB storage. I can simply add more storage to it, and it would still be much better than Zune. (I liked zune when it first came out, but it didn't make it for many people..) :(

Yeah, I wouldn't see a Zune phone either. It'd be interesting, but only remotely. With the expansion cards and a WM-based phone, you're already surpassing a Zune big time.

Why would this even be a story? I don't know why HTC were asked to comment and I can't understand why they'd bother. The iPhone looks like a nice device but it's not coming out for another six months. At that point we'll discover if it's in any way usable and stable. TBH, the fact that Apple have stated that no 3rd party applications will be allowed on the device pretty much rules it out as a viable system for me.
HTC have already published their roadmap for 2007 so it should come as no surprise that "mimicking the iPhone" is not in their immediate plans.
