Need help understanding the file structure

Hi all

I am puzzled by the file structure I see in file explorer. I can see the following entries:

Built in storage
CF card
My documents
Programme files
Temp
Windows

I have a My Documents folder on my CF with much more in it so the My Documents I am seeing - is that in my built in storage? Is built in storage the same as ROM?

Advice gratefully received

You have 4 types of memory on you axim.

-The Rom, that's where your operating system is located, everything that is left is called the Built-In Storage.

-The Ram, this part is divided in 2 pieces, your memory and a place to store your programs, documents etc. (you can choose how to divide it in the Start--->Settings--->Memory menu.
Everything you have stored in the Ram is temporary, as soon as you hard reset, it wipes out the entire Ram. Turning off doesn't wipe out your ram, because turning the axim off puts it into a sleep mode.

-Compact Flash slot, you can use it for extra storage, or you can place a modem, camera, etc. in it.

-Secure Digital slot, you can also use it for extra storage (although secure digital is slower than compact flash and more expensive)

Hope that helps:)

Yes that mostly answers my question thanks but is the my documents folder actually in the built in storage? There seems to be nothing in that folder apart from a document with my name and the My folder and Programme files and Temp files folders are appearing outside of that.

I think I may be misunderstanding the relationships between the folders

You have 2 My Documents. One is located on your ram and on on your rom. The one on your rom is: Built-In Storage--->My Documents. And the other one is My Documents. Everything you store in your rom is permanently there (unless you delete it of course) and everything in your ram is temporarily, until you hard reset. Program Files, Temp etc. is all stored in your ram.

That's odd as in file explorer I go Built in Storage and there is no my documents file only something that looks like a system file with no file association called Linsey -my name - 464Kb and that is the only thing there. Is something wrong?

:crooked: Eh...I don't know if something is wrong, but I do now that I don't have a file with my name in my built-in storage. Try performing a soft-reset and check if it is still there, could be a bug in ppc2002. OR have you tried opening the file on your pocket pc or your desktop pc to see what it is?

I've done a couple of soft resets today for various reasons and it is always there - has been for as long as I can remember. I looked on the desktop in active sync explorer and the file has a LSS extension. Any ideas...thanks for keeping up with my queries!

I've done some searching, and from what I've found, a file with the extension LSS is either

Spreadsheet (Legato/IBM Works for OS/2)

OR

WordPro; LotusScript macro language

OO-er...I've no idea where that may have come from as I have never used either. Do you think it would be safe to delete it and should I create a my documents folder there. Everything seems to working OK as it is though so maybe I should leave well alone.

I don't know if you're using a spreadsheet program, but maybe you accidently copied it to your axim.
Maybe pocket excel can save files in .lss format, I don't know because I never use pocket excel.

You can keep it on your axim, or if you are sure it's not harmfull to delete it and don't want to waste the memory on it, you can back it up to your desktop pc, so if anything goes wrong you can undo it.

If you decide to delete it, I suggest to make a full back-up of your pocket pc. (Start--->Programs--->Data Backup)

Or you could just wait until someone who knows more about this replies and helps you out.

Good luck!
