I've had my Axim for about three weeks now and I've already got lots of information on there that I wouldn't won't to lose, particularly financial info entered into Cash Organizer 2000 and Excel spreadsheets.

How often should back up the PDA?
What are recommended methods - backing up to a laptop/desktop or to a memory card?

Also, while I'm posting, and just to prove what a newbie I truly am, what should the memory cards be used for, generally? For backing up, for adding space for more programs to exist, to hold ebooks?

Thanks in advance.

I'd backup fairly frequently, particularly with financial data. Just consider this: How much data would you have to re-enter if you had to restore to the way it was a week ago? A month ago? A year ago?

I use the SD Card for all the data I can put there, plus all the programs I can install. I try to keep Main memory as free as I can. And I put all ebooks on the SD card. The rationale for keeping main memory free is that I find the PPC more responsive with more main memory available. It gets slower as the free memory decreases because it has to shuffle memory around to let everything have room to operate.

I use the Backup utility that is included in Active Sync on the PC. It copies everything except memory cards, and will restore a completely wiped-out unit back just like you had it when you created the copy.
Making incremental backups doesn't take long after the initial full upload, so every day isn't impractical to update the backup files.
Go to Tools, Backup/Restore, and select full backup the first time and incremental every time after that.

If you ever think you need to restore, do a hard reset first as it cleans out the operating files. After doing the screen align thing and tap/hold exercises, sync up and choose a guest partnership, and hit restore.
It will re-establish the old partnership from there. When prompted, choose to download all sync files from the PC.

Is there a program that allows you to back up your SD cards and CF?
