Linux on Axim
Hi all,

Did anyone ever tried to put linux on the axim? Or do someone know someone who did it or knew another who did so?

I will buy me an PDA and the axim is for now my favorite, but somehow i insist on Linux as OS...

Could someone help me deciding...

thanks a lot

Why wouldn't you just buy a PDA that comes with Linux like the Sharp Zaurus? By using the Axim with an OS that it is not intended to run you are basically giving up all available support from both Dell and communities like this.

Just an observation.

FYI, the Sharp Zaurus 5500 (which I was also looking into getting) can be had for ~$200.

For me, my PDA choice was down to this and the Axim. I picked up the axim and haven't regretted it since.

It's not for everyone though and the Sharp Zaurus does have a CF and SD slot and a neat built in keyboard. It might be what you're looking for.

good luck

Well I for one can see why someone would want to put linux on the Axim its far chearper than the Sharp SL-5600 400 MHz xscale PDA $500+ and why would this community not at the very least allow those that choose to actually do more than just add a new today screen to ask questions and provide as much help as we all can.

I honestly think that you are the exception to the rule around here.

Be warned that putting Linux on a pocket pc is A LOT more dangerous than installing it on your computer, as no real major companies support this and if it doesn't work right your pocket pc becomes a brick. Plus there is very little software for Linux handhelds. The safest and best way to do this is to buy a Sharp Zaurus.

(There may not even be handheld linux distros for Axims, there are some for iPaqs but I wouldn't try that on an Axim, cause it is completely different hardware and almost certainly wouldn't work.)

The current state of linux on the axim.
Linux isn't ready for prime time yet on the axim but it does run.
See http://www.clanbv.org/public/axim.html for details.

Trying linux on the axim isnt dangerous to the axim but it does require a hard reset to get windows back.
