New Owner - Need Recommended First Steps
Okay - I just received my new axim which replaced my M500. I am pleased so far. What I need are your first recommended changes/ updates that I should do.
I have installed & synchronized my contacts with Windows XP Pro. I have the A00 version of OS.
I do have a question about how to edit a contact in the contacts area. I highlight the contact and don't know what to do next to edit the content. The help file says to tap edit, but I cant find "edit".
Thanks for all your input.

You might want to consider the ROM upgrade. There are a few issues it fixes ( see thread about it here) and if you think you it's something you'll want to do, it's probably easier before you install additional programs. Read the instruction file for the upgrade carefully if you decide to do it.
For the contacts, rather than highlighting a contact, tap on it. That will open the file and the "edit" will be at the bottom of the screen.
If you plan to use any auxilary cards (WiFi, modem, etc.), I would load their drivers before putting on more programs. As for other things, it always seems a largely individual choice. Here's a thread where someone else asked a similar question where you can get some ideas.
Enjoy!

Hi, IKEHIKER. I got my AXIM last week ann wondered if I tried to ROM upgrade before I installed some applications. I tracked loooooooong thread about A00-A02 upgrade and see my PXA250 400MHZ B2 STEPPING may not appreciate upgrade very much.
What's your personal opinion? If you were me, would you try upgrade? Just I am afraid that I may trash my AXIM.
And opinions from anybody will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I guess the answer is, it depends. Are the 'fixes' involved with issues that are important to you? For example, backup battery notification, time-out of the power button light to extend battery life were issues I felt were important. If you use the d-pad a lot, this feature was improved in A02 as was the use of a CF modem. In A03, the pocket internet explorer was fixed so you can now reach a lot of sites that would not work previously.
On the other side of the coin - how well does your ActiveSync connection work? If it is at all iffy (that is, if you have trouble keeping a connection), that would sway me toward not doing it. My impression from reading the forums, most of the failures were due to losing connection during the file transfer.
Whichever way you decide, you should go to A03. As has been pointed out by others here, the fact that Dell came out so quickly with A03 after A02 leads a lot of us to believe there were some other issues fixed and there is no point in going through the upgrade twice. The entire operating system is included in A03.

Thank you
Thank you, IKEHIKER for your prompt reply. I did not have chance to use AXIM this week and will test ActiveSync reliability in my PC soon. If it seems fine, then...well, a bit scared but will try to upgrade.
But if it fails, I cannot install old ROM (downgrade), right? DELL may not take care of such an AXIM. And that's why I am scared.

Thanks IKEHIKER
I appreciate you getting to this question so quickly. Thank you also for not flaming me for asking a likely stupid question. I searched, but did not find what I was looking for. Thanks for posting the link. It was helpful.
I'll try the upgrate to A03, since I don't have any sync issues.

It is true that if it fails, you will not be able to reinstall the previous system but, Dell should replace it. You are not doing anything to void your warranty by doing this upgrade. The file comes from Dell and is intended to be used on the Axim. (Exceptions to this would be if you try to change the language version, i.e. from a different language to English, but the upgrade process should warn you if you are trying this). If something does go wrong and the customer support gives you any grief about it, just go up the line to a manager and above until you get satisfaction.
Now, I will reimphasize following the instructions. They are included on the Dell download site (R59758.exe) along with the actual upgrade file (R59756.exe). Note, the upgrade itself is a large file, 27MB, so expect the download to take a while. Also, there are some instructions on the Tutorial section of this site which may be even more educational than the ones from Dell.

Yes,dell will replace it if something goes wrong, and it is verry recommended to do the update,it seems to make it run slightly faster.
Everything went smooth for me,and MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DO ANYTHING DURING THE ROM UPDATE.;)

I upgraded the OS last night. Took about 15 minutes after the download was complete.
Now I am trying to re-set everything. Seems to have worked. No issues so far syncing or anything.
Now, should I upgrade to 3.7 from 3.5 in activesync?

I haven't seen any differences between ActiveSync 3.5 and 3.7, but M$ claims there are some issues that were fixed so this would probably be as good a time as any. I'm glad the upgrade went OK.

Upgraded ! But SysInfo.txt?
Thank you for all the people who posted information here, including ReecerX as a starter of this thread . Upgrade has been done without any problem!
But when I first saw SysInfo.txt, it did not show new ROM version. After a while, I checked it again, then it showed correct ROM version.
I don't know what happened....? Actually while I went to Blimpie, something happened. I saw some message telling a failure of USB driver (I should have remembered the exact message) and ActiveSync was disconnected. So I took my AXIM from the cradle and put it back to the cradle, AciveSync worked again and I checked the ROM version again. Then SysInfo.txt showed correct ROM version. I hope I did not make a mistake in the procedure of ROM upgrade.

Actually, as the name suggests, sysinfo.txt is a text file. It is created/updated when you look at the System Information (under Settings, System). Likely, the first time you looked after the upgrade you were looking at the copy that was restored from your backup but created under the old ROM.
