Question Axim 300 or 400 - Help me decide!

What are the pro's and con's of buying the Axim 400 over the 300? If you can convince me, I'll buy the 400 otherwise the 300 will be just as good and definitely considerably cheaper. I want the most bang for my buck.

I can get the Axim 300 PLUS USB cradle for $154 with free shipping, should I get that or the 400?

Thanks.

I got the 300 for $$$ reasons, plus I wasn't interested in the cradle. I installed a 128SD card and loaded a ton of applications on that. I haven't determined a situation where I have any problems with the lesser memory of the 300. If you are concerned about the extra cost of the 400 then you will do fine with the 300.

One of my theories about the 300 vs 400 is that some users could buy the 400 and load their apps in main memory, and not need to buy any expansion memory whereas if they bought the 300 they would have to spend extra for a memory card. Another of my theories says that some rare apps, perhaps using GPS and maps, will benefit from the additional main memory.

I have the 300, and wish I had the 400 just because I would know I had it. I still have 24 MB of total memory left because I got a 512 CF card for movies and music, so I store everything there, but I would still know I had the 400.

I think it's a bit hard to answer that question, because you can only determine what suits you best if you had to work with both of them for a minute. I mean, is a 400 really much faster than a 300? and are there really that many apps that require the 64 meg?

I couldn't decide, just because of that, and I chose to be sure : I got me the 400. I have no complaints about it, i installed ALOT of soft in my internal mem, and even more on my CF. even with 6 megs free only, i could run every app and most games. Now i think it really comes down to if you can miss the extra money needed for the 400 vs 300.

choose wisely my friend :)

Price Difference

At the time I purchased my 400, the price difference was so small ($50) between the two, it was no decision at all. Extra memory a bit more umph in the processor. I'm sold.

BTW, the cradle is a pain in the bottom. every time I use it I'm nervous that I'm going to break the Ax. So, I wouldn't reccomend that be a part of the decision making process.

I bought the 400 for the RAM. Whatever app you run, now or future, has to be loaded to RAM. It's pretty hard to add more RAM after you buy the Ax. As a secondary consideration, Dell might offer an OS upgrade someday, and it might take more ROM than is in the 300. If this happens, the only options are to drop some features or "outboard" features as separate programs, as the OS has to be placed in ROM.

Of course, it was an easy decision, because the $$$ wasn't all that important to me.

totally true! I haven't even thought of that before I ordered my baby! Luckily i have the least fears with the 400! I read somewhere that dell is working on an upgrading-service, they would install an extra 64 Mbit and an updated rom, so we end up with 128 intern!! would be niiiice!:D

Thanks for the replies. I should have searched because there's about a dozen other 400 vs 300 threads here ;)

If I were smart I wouldn't buying anything now and wait for 600MHz+ PPC's with WiFi built in but those will probably cost $$$.

I can afford the 400 but when the day comes to sell it I'd rather know that I only paid $152 for the 300, so if I sell it for $100 I'll be content.

So I guess the 300 it is.

My 2 cents, get the 400. If not for the speed, get it for the additional RAM/ROM. Once you find all the cool software out there that you'll want to use, your storage will start filling up. I don't think the money you'll save on getting the 300 is worth it. I would recommend watching a site like http://www.bensbargains.net or http://www.techbargains.com and just wait until you can get the 400 for around $250+. That's how much I paid for mine. It was a great deal and it's totally worth it. Also, since you mentioned the 600mhz, just FYI, I've successfully overclocked mine to 590mhz. :) I don't run it at that, I run ~500mhz, but still, it's possible.

I ordered my 300 today. With some coupon codes from www.fatwallet.com i was able to get it for under $156.00. So it was a no brainer for me, with that price, to go with the 300 mhz. I can not wait till it gets here.

I got the 400, but downgraded to a USB cable. Saved 20 bucks and I like the cable a lot better. I have way too much stuff on my desk as it is and the cable is easier to get out of the way than the cradle. I wouldn't buy a 300 if you plan on doing much in the way of multimedia. Don't get me wrong, I think the 300 will process it fine, it's just the lower storage capacity that can cause you issues. Just my 2 cents, fwiw

Could've gotten the 400 for 250 today at Dell Business... :) But it's all good, you'll love your Axim either way...

If you look at development sites, the 400 is the 'Standard' Dell Axim. The 300 is like the old Pentium 386 / 486 days when you could save a few bucks and get a 'dumbed down' unit.
