I'm a PDA newbie and am loving my new Axim!!!

My dilemma is this: I want to expand the memory of my Axim for various reasons (mp3's, more programs etc). Yet I do not know which type to buy. Compactflash RAM appears to be cheaper by as much as $20 for the same amount of megs. Is SD faster / "more reliable" than compact flash?

As far as i can see the only reason to go with SD is that i could put other things in the compact slot such as a modem. I dont have any real need for a modem or wireless card and have no plans on buying one any time soon. So if they both the same in terms of efficiency, might as well go with compactflash.

Any advice would be much appreciated and i apologize for any misuse of tech terms (like i said, i'm new).

Thanks!

DK,

You pretty much have it figured out! If you feel you'll never use the CF slot, get the cheaper, faster (on the Axim, anyway) CF memory. But who knows, maybe there's a camera that will come out or something? Me, I spent the extra $10-20 and got a SD card that will stay in my Axim all the time, and keep my eye out for any new CF gadgets (besides my WiFi card!)

At first glance you might think if you don't plan on using your CF slot you might as well go for the most affordable memory. But it's been my experience that something always comes up. Down the road you may find a great deal on a GPS unit, Wireless Nic, Modem or who knows what device they come up with. The Axim can only use the SD slot for memory - so you might as well put memory in there. I found a good deal on a 256Mb SD card for 80 bucks from Scandisk. At Best Buy there is a huge difference in price between SD and CF prices - but the price difference isn't near as big online. Check it out.

Speed wise I find the SD takes a little longer to transfer files than the CF. Although I don't have any official benchmarks - playing files from the SD shows no slowdown that I can see.
