Question What size of CF card?

I am in the process of purchasing an Axim 400mhz. I have never owned a PDA or Pocect PC before. I have an opportunity to buy from Amazon either a 256mb or 512mb CF. My question seems basic. Should I buy two 256mb or one 512mb. My reason: If one goes bad or damaged I still have the other. Or should I get the 512mb since I can have more programs on one CF. Is there a benefit to doing one option over the other? What would you do? Thanks

I think one 512 will do. haven't heard many people complaining about a broken cf. in fact, I never heard of it! (doesn't mean they don't exist:D )

I would go for one.

With kind regards,

Wannahave

I currently have a 512 MB CF and am quite happy with it. ALthough with all of my roms, themes, and e-books, I am quickly running out of space. It is amazing how quickly you can fill a card up.

I am actually using one 256 Meg CF card and it is doing me fine.
I plan on getting the SD card next and probably a 512, that way I'll just use the CF card for backup and extra stuff leaving the CF slot for other peripherals.
As for the size of the card, it depends on what you use it for. If you plan on putting movies on your Axim, that you'll want the biggest you can get.
If you just have some data files, a bunch of pictures and several MP3s you could do just fine with 256 or 512 Meg. The bigger you get the more of these you will be able to put on.
I'd go with one 512 SD card.

It's the same thing as with hard drives in PC. You'll never get roomy enough. It fills up sooner or later:D

Yep, I finally broke down and ordered a new hard drive day before yesterday. The new one is 60 GB so hopefully it will last me awhile. :D

Actually, Michael, I'd suggest you get a decent-sized SD card, and a biggish CF. So if the trade-off was a 256 or a 512CF, I'd go for the 256, and pick up a 128SD or larger.

That way you can get used to the axim and what you can do with it (have room for some music, and video, but not too much on the CF), and load all your apps right away on the SD card.

Then after a few months, when you get interested in WI-FI or GPS or other applications which need the CF card, you can get them. :D

Plus, by then the CF cards will be much cheaper, and you can always pick up a 512 for what you'd pay for a 236 right now.

;)

Good luck, whatever you decide. It's great fun!

Which memory

I bought a 256 SD card from Dell for $57 and 1 gig CF card. There is a trick to finding cheaper prices on the Dell website for memory cards.

If you you want to use a CF accessory at a later stage then you don't have a problem if you only have cf memory.

Thank you all for your advice. I appreciate it. With rebates and coupons, I was able to buy a 512 mb CF at Amazon for $44.00. It just arrived today.

I missed Dells 10% of the Axim ($292.50) by one day. I will be checking each day as they always run promos.

I would still advise that your get yourself an SD card to run your progams and stuff you want on your Axim all the time so that if you want to use a network, wi-fi, modem, gps or bluetooth cf card you don't lose program functionality when the accessory card is plugged in. I would suggest a minimum of 128 MB SD card for this purpose.

Here is my rule for storage size...

1. Estimate how much space you think you will need. Or if you already have existing space that is max'd out, what size is it.
2. Multiply that number by 4.
3. Buy new storage in that size.
4. You will be set for 2 years of expansion.

My home computer went from 20MB to 40MB to 60MB to 120MB to 330MB to 660MB to 2.5GB to 3.5GB to 20GB which is where I am at now, so I have a little experience with expansion.
