How to install PHM Registry Editor
I can't figure out how to install PHM Registry Editor. After downloading the zipped program, I see 10 zipped files but no extentions, ie. no cab or setup file. Any ideas as to how to install this program?
Thanks,
Len

I downloaded the program about 6 weeks ago. The zip file had 8 files, including a setup.exe which will install the program through activesync.

Which setup package
Ike,
Which setup package did you use. I followed their insructions:
All Pocket PC 2002 devices are ARM based, so select "CAB - ARM (hi-color)" regardless of your device manufacturer. I couldn't find a cab file. So you must have used a different setup package for your Axim.

The file I'd downloaded was named regedit.pocketpc.zip. I just looked at their website (linked to from the download site above) and notice they've changed their setup. On the EULA agreement page, there is a dropdown list where you can chose the cab for the arm (hi color) which, once you accept their agreement, will download a file named regedit.Mrln_ARM.cab. Since this is a cab file, you should be able to just copy it to your Axim and run it there (double tap from file explorer or any other file manager you have on the Ax) for the installation.
I hope this helps.

These are the files that I downloaded
Ike,
These are the files that come up in winzip after downloading the correct choice in downloads: I've attached a jpg, hope it shows.

OK, now I see what you are doing. That file is not a zip file, it's a cab. Copy the entire file to the Axim and run it from there. It will just install (not show you the contents).

Can I copy the files to an SD card or does it have to go straight into rom?

You can copy the file to an sd card but I think the installation will automatically go to the 'default location' which is main memory(and it's just the original cab file you downloaded that you want to copy, not the extracted files)

Now I'm really confused. Do you mean all the files that I've listed above, copied to lets say, the temp subdirectory under my documents in internal ram? Do you mean not to unzip the files even though they are zipped? I'm still learning the pda os, I know pc windows like the back of my hand but the pda os is totally different. I hope not to appear really stupid. I just double checked the directory that I extracted to from winzip and indeed the file sizes are the same. Do I still have to copy the top file which mentions FAX also.

Len,
Try it like this....
Cradle your Ax so that it's connected to your PC. Open Windows Explorer on your PC and locate the CAB file that you want to install. Right-click on it and select Copy from the menu. Now scroll down in the left pane of Windows Explorer and locate the Mobile Device listing. Click on it and in a blank area of the right side pane, right-click and select paste. This copies the CAB to the Ax. It doesn't matter where on the Ax you copy the CAB to. It will automatically extract the files and install them for you. Once it's complete it should delete the CAB file as well.

Yes, do not unzip the file. It really isn't zipped (it's a cab file). WinXP allows you to treat it like a zipped file but it's designed to be copied intact to the Axim. The PPC software will see it as an installation file and install the program when you double tap on it.
I just today learned about a program called cab install which will allow you direct cab installations to locations other than the default but a registry editor would probably be better in the default, anyway. Since you are a newby to PPC, you want to be careful about using the registry editor. As with PC versions of Windows, if you mess it up, you may be left with an inoperable and unrepairable system.

Ike,
Finally, I got it. When the download went into winzip, I copied the files (which turned out to be one file) to my PC, then followed your instructions. I've never copied zipped files (this time not knowing that they weren't zipped). I've always extracted them for pc programs. This is a new one to me and I learned alot, thanks. Now for some reg tweaks. Any I should stay away from? I've edited the registry on my pc before without problems. Of course, I have system restore on ME for confidence. I'll try to be careful.
Again Thanks Very Much for Your Time,
Len

I'm glad it worked. I know what you mean about the differences, even installing executable files in PPCs are different since you run them on the PC. The Axim is my first PDA so in chronological terms, I'm a newby, too. I'm sure you'll be giving other people pointers in a short time.
As for the registry, the only registry tweaks I've done on the Ax are what other people have described. Some possiblities for you are listed in this site's FAQs.
Enjoy!

It's nice for other reasons, for example, moving programs around form say, memory to an SD card or somethng like that is nice, oyu can do that from RegEdit rahter than reinstalling etc.
There are also tweaks for individual programs you can do.
The cab problem is understandable... most sites don't explain that at all, I must have downloaded 6 of those before a site finally explained the entire concept in detail. It's especially confusing if oyu have file extensions disabled in Windows, and ".cab" is associated by some application. (the #1 source of problems with installations it seems...)
