How to read memory status in WM 5.0?

I just got myself an X51 (not v), but I'm very confused about the memory status under Settings -> System -> Memory in WM 5.0

I know my X51 has 64 MB RAM and 128 MB ROM, and the memory page reports:

Storage
Total: 76.16 MB
In use: 28.68 MB
Free: 47.48 MB

Program
Total: 50.69 MB
In use: 13.23 MB
Free: 37.46 MB

Those numbers don't look like 64 or 128. So which one is the ROM, which one is the RAM? :rolling: The sum of the totals look something like 128MB (which is ROM size). If it is then where do I see the RAM?

First of all, is 64MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM. The sum of both Storage and Program that you see is the total RAM available. You don't see the ROM there because you don't have acces to it. (ROM = Read Only Memory) That's where the OS and other programs loaded from factory resides.

I'm pretty sure it's 64 MB RAM and 128 MB ROM.

And according to this http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=76407
you can install things in "writable ROM" (or BIS) so that they won't be gone when you do a hard reset.

I just don't know if the OS is telling me about RAM or ROM...

The program memory is RAM, and the reason it says 50.69 rather than the full 64MB is because an amount of it is set aside for things like Wi-fi and bluetooth stacks and other operating system buffers before the memory applet can see it, there has been some discussion about this but I couldn't say where it is on this site at the moment.

The storage memory is only 76.16 MB becauase part of it is taken up with the image of your operating system, what you are left with is 76MB for you to install your own stuff in, it just doesn't report the room you can't use.

For the image of the operating system, do you mean the the \Windows folder?

When I use "Where is my ram" and browse at \*, it told me that the \Windows folder is taking up ~50MB of ROM, which seems to adds up with the total storage to a correct 128MB. But it also told me that \Windows is the only folder taking up ROM space. How do I check what's taking up the 28.68MB of ROM "In use"?

As you say, the ~50MB of \Windows is essentially what is masking part of your ROM from the system, it is protected by the system and thus not removable and so is not shown as available to the memory control panel.

I suspect Where Is My Ram doesn't properly support the way WM5 deals with memory so may not be showing you the full picture, but I've not used WIMR so I don't know exactly how it displays info. I've found MemMaid a good program to display memory usage quite well, purely by folders so you can see the size of each folder.

The "Storage" is basically telling you how much space on the device you have full access to, so you can install or delete programs, music or whatever in that space. The missing part you have no access to write to, otherwise you could very easily put your device into a state where not even a hard reset could restore it.

The 28.68MB are likely to be things you've installed and most of it will be in "\Program files" or possibly Internet Explorer will have temporary files in "\Windows\Temporary Internet Files" if I remember correctly. (I can't check now as my other half has comandeered my Axim while she's ill and I'm at work, I should never have shown her how well Sudoku works on a pda....)

MemMaid is showing the same thing as WIMR. Rom is taken up by only that ~50 MB of \Windows, and nothing else (even \Program Files is 0 Bytes)

Thanks for the answer so far, but I'm afraid I'm still puzzled where things are taking up space...
