Many of the utilities have a housekeeping function that will clean up dead shortcuts. Look into the already mentioned TotalCommander or MemMaid, SKTools, It can also be done manually, of course.
If you install and then deinstall a lot of programs you might want to either get very used to doing hard resets and fresh installs of everything or get familiar with a registry editor. Programs often leave droppings in \Windows\ that are never removed by a deinstall, too. I picked up SKTools' SKTracker to make the task of finding all the debris left behind easier.
