Icon14 A late bloomer, keep me right please

A big hello to all you lads and lassies from AlbaJoe here in Scotland. I have just newly aquired an X50V (£160 worth it???) for the missus. Its pimary function is to help her manage her small business which she is just starting up.

I noticed the roadmap link is dead which was a bit of a dissapointment and a lot of the guides are dated (are they still relevant?) or simarly point to dead links.

Anyway can you recommend any applications that would be useful for her business e.g organiser, accounts etc.?
What/ where is the latest rom/ drivers ?
What are the first pitfalls I may come across ?
Can I use this on a WAP-PSK encrypted home network ?

These are just the start of my questions and I promise to read into the site further when time permits but I need to get her started ASAP

Much thanks in advance

AlbaJoe

I recommend Pocket Informant 2005 which is a Pocket Outlook enhancement. I think this would be good for you missus in helping her keep her business contacts organized as well as her days and tasks organized. Check MyPDA for some useful programs I use as well as some good links.

Pocket Informant coupled with Pocket Breeze is a lethal combination. You should check it out. :approve:

Welcome to the owners club, good deal you got there :approve:

I'd recomend Gigi's excellent '' what can I do with my axim' tutorial, and the wifi tutorial at wifi.aximsite.com for starters.

see you both round the forums

Yeah, I noticed the "side by side" comparison feature still doesn't have the X51 series, even though some important stats have changed (ROM, for example). Somebody with Chris' ear, drop him a line and ask who is responsible for that? Poor guy, he has another 7 boards to administer.

Thankyou for your quick responses, it is reassuring that there is some support for an essentially discontinued product. A great site !!!

I have jsut recieved it this morning and its in excellent condition. I was wanting to get its rom etc. up to date and was considering the WM 5 upgrade. As it doesnt have any warranty left I am a little hesitant in throwing all the updates etc until I speak with you people. As I have seen with other Microsoft software there is often stability issues and a certain order for patches. So here was what i was thinking of doing.

1) Upgrade to latest rom - dell still have this on their site ? what is its release date.
2) Upgrade the active synch to 4.1 i think it is at the moment.
3) Install patches for windows 2003 SE
4) Install the majority of programs detailed in Loctus's "MY PDA"such as PocketInformant 2005 and PocketBreeze.
5) Upgrade to windows 5

Is this a reasonable procedure and is there anything I should be wary of.

Again Thanks In Advance

The latest ROM update for the X50V with WM2003SE is A05 which can be found here.
The programs listed in my particular MyPDA are just what I personally use or have tried. Your needs might be different, but its a good place to start. I also have links to a few great (IMO) MyPDAs from other aximsite.com members.

Some people have had problems with the upgrade to WM5.0 from WM2003SE, so I would just stick with WM2003SE as it is reportedly pretty stable. See how you like it first and if it works for you then no need to change.

Good luck with the process.

Wow you guys are well on top of things, reply already ? :approve:

Yeah I agree with you. I did notice some feedback on the DELL site of people complaining about the WM5 upgrade significantly reducing performance. So I will take your advice and stick with 2003.

I think your PDA are a good starter particuarly the 2 I mentioned. The rest will be research further down the line.

Going to have a go tonight with it all and will feedback tomorrow.

Thanks again all

Wm5 er um well the thing is (looks around in an embarrassed manner) it doesn't really work on the X50 series. If you have patience you can patch, tweak and hack it into working but wm2003se works so much better /quickly /reliably.

So back to your roadmap

1) A05 is the latest Rom. lf you have A01,2 or 3 I'd probably upgrade. (you can go straight to the latest version )

2)AS4.1 is ok (but 3.8 is the last version that supports wireless syncing, MS removed it from 4 for 'security reasons '

3)I think you need AS to install the rom update. there aren't any individual patches

4) Try the demo versions of the software (after reading Stoneraven's memory tutorial) go crazy, play with it all, then decide what you want/need, hard reset and just install that

(Pb has a 50percent discount for aximsite users btw)

I'D STRONGLY RECOMMEND BUYING SPRITE BACKUP especially if your going to carry all your business data on it.

5) I wouldn't bother but I think I've covered that

6) Enjoy aximsite :approve:

Hey thanks. In item 4 could you please elaborate, i dont know what the acronyms are and what/how the discount applies. Backup of data was going to be my next question so I will defo buy the one you recommended. What is BIS in your "my pda" list ?? something very obvious I am sure but I am a stupid genius

It appears that the unit already has A05 so thats good and I have it connected up to my wireless router.

When you say hard reset do you mean i try the software then after evaluation hard reset and install all the full versions ?

Can anyone also please recommend a good protective wallet, memory card (with recommended size) and presentation software. I want her to have a few presentation slides like power point so that she can connect the axim to a projector and do a nice ptch of her ideas.

I am seriously thinking of pinching this off her....its ace fun...

Cant say it enough, THANKS ALL

A hard reset will wipe your machine. The reason I suggested it is there's loads of software out there. Some of it good, some bad, some bloody amazing. Go and try it all.... and when you've made your mind up it's nice to have a clean slate, so you can set it up exactly how you like it without all that junk installed.

(but that advice is purely optional... the demo copies are normally full versions.. a registration code just stops them timing out)

Clearvue make a very good powerpoint viewer.. pocketslides is also good (but you have to convert the presentations on your ppc)

I know exactly what you mean, all I got to do was take it out the box....after that the old fella took over.

I know what you mean about experimenting but time is not on our side as she has a 3 month period to show that her business can make money. So I am pretty much relying on a personal/ consensus recommendation on what software to use.

If I was to start with buying:
Pocket Breeze
Informant 2005
Clear Vue (proffesional or standard ???)

would that be a good start or overkill ?

I cant seem to find the vga connector anywhere on e-bay ????

Cheers

sounds like a good start to me..

I'd also add Sprite Backup and maybe the contact Breeze plugin and you've got a solid platform. anything else depends on what the business is, and what you want to do with the axim.

I bought my VGA adapter from Dell btw...

Well I have achieved the basic milestones
1) rom updated to A05
2) NOT updated as I use a home wireless network
3) current anyway i.e. 1)
4) Bought the whole package of pocket breeze and informant 2005 - missus like them.

I am connected up for wireless with WPA-PSK encryption although I suspect the earliest rom versions only supported wep etc. so point 1) is a must...i think.

It is a nightmare trying to get the VGA cable in the uk but i found it eventually:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=127634 ------------ PLEASE NOTE IT ALSO COMES WITH CLEARVUE WHICH I WAS GOING TO BUY ANYWAY SO BONUS BONUS !!! SAVED SOME MONEY FOR YA ;~)

Well I hope I am imparting some of the excellent guidance provided buy this forum. I will continue to update this string to give a perspective of someone just starting off (in absence of the road map link).

K back to my questions - what memory and flash memory should I purchase and roughly what size ?

Looks like you're off to a good start and headed in the right direction. As for memory, your X50v accepts both SD (secure digital) and CF (Compact Flash). I would get the biggest capacity you are willing to spend money on at the moment. The largest capacity in the market for SD and CF cards are 4GB and 8GB, respectively.
