It would seem that when I turn on the wifi, the Axim becomes nothing more than another computer on my network. From there I also assume that I should be able to write files to the SD card from my PC without buying a bluetooth adapter for the PC (which I did anyway but don't have yet). Is there a way to make the SD card a shared drive? I hate moving stuff to the host PC and using sync to move files. Should be able to do this through regular peer to peer networking, or so it would seem.
You could always browse shares on the host or other computers shared on the network, using either the built-in explorer, or third-party software, like Total Commander. I have a folder on my desktop PC called "Axim Installs" where I drop .cab files that I can browse to and copy over with TC.
Total Commander, link in MyPDA.
I managed to find a freeware FTP client and set up an FTP server on one of my computers so I can move files that way. Shared drives would just be so much easier...
If you want to move files from the computer to the SD card on the PDA, you need to setup an FTP server on the PDA.
If you want to use the PDA to access shared files on the computer, you can just map to the share.
So - on your PDA you can access the computer with no additional software, however the computer cannot see the PDA without additional software.
If you're still using a version of AS prior to v4 that supports Wifi sync then you can wifi sync the PDA and it will appear on the computer and you can access it that way too.

Follow up question on this. I have made certain directories on my PC shared, but when I try to use the file explorer on my Axim (connected via wifi) to access this drive, it doesn't *quite* work. I have to type the directory path into internet explorer, which then opens file explorer. Then I can drill down but if I ever want to go back up the directory tree, I get an error (can't remember right now off the top of my head) and need to start the whole process again.
Has anyone ever had this problem before? Am I doing something obviously wrong?
you have to type in the computer name in the little sharing icon in file explorer with two backslashes ie : "\\My Desktop" then it should connect to your shared drive
"If you want to move files from the computer to the SD card on the PDA, you need to setup an FTP server on the PDA."
Well, actually, that isn't 100% the case. I put the files I want to move in the exposed directory on the PC running the server, log into it from the handheld, and transfer them downstream. And the reverse is true if I want to go from handheld to PC.
My question was answered by Axzilla. I just need to "set path" and use the UNC (uniform naming convention) of the full path to the host. In my case \\happy\c$.
(My computers are grumpy, happy, sleepy, dopey and doc, in the workgroup, what else, dwarf. They used to be Larry, Curly and Moe until I got more computers. After Shemp I would have had to use Curly Joe..... :-) )
And now on to the other post, "What good is Bluetooth really?" I put 'bluetooth accessories' into Google and got 6000 pages of headsets and cell phones. I was hoping to find something a little more useful. One suggestion for using bluetooth was for moving photos from a cell phone to the Axim, but for my specific situaton, my cameras use SD and so does the Axim, so that's moot.
Does anything go in the compact flash slot other than memory? Anybody make a camera maybe that slips in there? A radio tuner? How about a USB port card?
Thanks to everybody for the responses. This is a well of knowledge that I have just started drinking from.

Hmm..... I think you are mistaken. I meant you set up the FTP server on the DESKTOP, and keeping in mind that you can not only download via FTP, but also upload.
P.S. A free ftp server is FileZilla.

Putting an FTP server on the computer does not allow Eddie to write directly to his SD card from his computer. With an FTP server on the computer he cannot PUSH the files to the SD card.

I use the client on the Axim to connect to the FTP server on the PC, and then I can specify any destination folder on the Axim for to write the downloads, including the SD card, so actually I have FTP'd down directly to the SD card.
I have been running an FTP server on and off for years as friends want specific files that are too big for their email server to accept. So many ISPs limit a file attachment to 2meg. And now broadband so easily available these days I think it's time to lift that limit, or extend it to 10 meg.
I remember a day at work that some "cute" flash attachment was the rage, and as the pass-around exponentially reached 50 users sending it to 5 people each, wow did the mail server die a quick, painful death.... The attachment was 6 megs, and 50 people tried to sent it all at once to almost 300 recipients. All for something as stupid as the gerbil dance or something equally silly as that. Might have been the macaroni macherina....

So? Whats wrong with Pull?
And many email services have limits of 10 MB, eddie.
Examples: Gmail, Hotmail (beta), Yahoo, Opt Online.... shall I continue?
