encoding video

If I want to encode avi video for playback on my x51v what is the best encoding software to use? also is it free or not? and what are the best settings I should encode video at? such as framerate, etc that do not make the size of file too big , the question is :what encoding settings should I use to get maximum quality without making the file size too big?
also what is the best player to use? tcpmp I am guessing or can wmp 10 play avi?
thanks in advance

Edit: Ok, for some reason the video does not match up with audio after I encoded a 350mb video to 175 MB , like when someone speaks you wont hear what they say until a 3 seconds later. Whats wrong? I am wondering if it is a problem with the software or with my video file but when I play it on my comp it is fine

Oops.
Sorry, I think I misread your first post. I assumed you wanted to convert some other video to .avi, but it looks like you were trying to re-encode .avi to play back on your Axim. That tutorial I linked to probably wasn't the best answer to your question. I think AGK should be able to do this, but I haven't tried it. I've never had a problem with the audio being out of sync when encoding DVDs to .avi. If the re-encoded video is playing fine on your computer (WMP?) then I'm guessing it's the player your using on the Axim. Are you using TCPMP? Did you install all of the codecs as well? Did you try increasing the audio buffer?

Yeah I tried all that still was not in sync, well I never tried playing the re-encoded file on my comp, just the original one, but it doesnt matter though cause when i dont convert the video and just copy the original avi file directly to the card and play it in TCPMP it is fine. oh well, thanks anyway
