x3 memmory

I have a X3 with 64 meg of built in ram and 64 meg rom. I understand memory in the PC context but the axim confuses me a little. When I check the memory, the main memory is split for storage and program. It looks like 64 meg in total (32 meg for each). Is this Ram or rom? If I check the storage card tab, I have the option to check the menory of built in storage or the sd card. The sd card is easy but the built in storage showes total storage of 34.81 meg. what is this?
