Stock Password Lock Utility and Third Party Ones

Consider this a newbie question though I can't say I am one anymore.

Having used the pda for a few months I need to start thinking security protection to the device itself (which could mean I am serious now....) I have a few questions on the stock password lock utility and third party ones and wish to have contributions from all of you....

1) Is the stock one reliable? I mean is there no trapdoors/bug found that could unlock the device without hard resetting it?
2) What are the avantages of the third party password locking apps over the stock one? Cool down period and auto hard reset after a few failed attempt and what else?

I imagine that I don't need extra security on top of the stock one as long as it could prevent others from using it without correct password or hard reset so my addressbook could be secured. I store no password or credit card info on the device so practically no encryption tools is needed except for fun. Also, the contents on my storage card is no more valuable than the card itself.....:)

I have been password protecting my PPC for years. The default password is effective, but limited. That is why I started looking for alternatives. After trying and buying different software, I settled on Pocket Secure http://www.totalpocketpc.com/

Take a look. Customer service is great!

I use the default one(like in your case no really important info). I just have it up thier in case of theft the theif cannot use it(seeing as how most people don't know to hard reset it). If someone takes your axim and given time they can get into no matter what, passwords are just hurtles for those people.

Thanks TWMiller! :approve:

Pocket Secure goes far beyond the standard built-in password, and the new v4.0 (currently in beta testing), will have a great new / additional layer of security protection to protect any important / personal files, just in case someone were to 'break thru' the first level of defense! ;)

The Trial is free, so give it a try.... :)

I use the default as well.

For anything I need secured beyond this I use a point solution. e.g.: SplashID for encyrpted information; Sprite Backup encrypted backups.

Well I am not exactly a Newbie and until now I have been using the stock/built-in utility but then again I don't let the unit out of my sight.

Anyway, I am not feeling SECURE with the stock one so I am shopping for a security application for my unit.

Pocket Secure seems to have the most of the features I want. Is there a way I can encrypt a folder of files vs a single file? Can a memory card be password encrypted?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Blkngold,

Yes, you can encrypt a whole folder full of files! To do this, find the folder with the files for encrypting, then "tap & drag" from the far right of the screen, to the left and down (or up), until all of the files you want are highlighted! They will all be added to the list...

PS can't do a whole storage card at one time right now, but I'll be working on something like this in the future! ;)

I use PicturePassword. I originally used this on my old Palm.

You still use the built-in password (4 digit or complex) but it's only used as a backup. The main way to use picture password is to use a picture (to state the obvious :) ). You pick your picture and then you pic the point or points on the picture that you want to use. Then when you turn it on the next time, you hit the point/points with your stylus/fingernail/finger (which ever you choose on setup) and it will unlock. If you hit the wrong point, or more importantly someone else does, you goes the the 4-digit/complex password. HUGE time saver.

You also have the option of using the hardkeys too, but I don't use those. Look in myPDA under System Utilities for the link.

Picture Password is a pretty good app! I tried it awhile back. But if you want encryption also, or have a WM5 device, you're out of luck!
