Hi, my name is Megan, im 13, going on 14 on July 17. I probally will be getting a pocket pc for my birthday, since i got good grades and stuff.
Anyways, i posted a few days ago about wireless interenet possiblities on the Axim. And i got some good feedback from some people.(thanks :)
So earlier tonight, we went to Circuit City, to look at pocket pc's, and see what the people there had to say. We asked about bluetooth.(actually my mom did, while i was playing with the pocket pc's) The dude said the only one that works with bluetooth was this sony one. I didnt say anything, because i was too busy playing a game, but after im like, i thought you can buy a bluetooth card or wi fi card and go from there. So now im sooo confused! Was this dude right or wrong? Is the dell Axim x5 compatible with bluetooth,wi fi, and/or IR?
Also, does anyone know if AT&T would let me connect to the internet with IR with my nokia phone, or if its compatible with bluetooth or wi fi? I heard something about the provider needing a circuit data switch too? Sorry if these are too many questions, im just really confused at the moment, but hopefully you can help clear it up. :)
Thanks!
Megan
P.S- one last question, for now,..... if i cant get on the internet, what other stuff can a 13,going on 14, year old do? Like what apps, games, programs, ebooks, and other stuff are there? and are most of it free and easy to do? Thanks sooo much in advance :)
I'll answer the free stuff. I'm still getting use to WiFi and Bluetooth myself and I'm older. :p
There are tons of freeware for the PPC. games, ebooks, apps, background themes, some videos and music......
But the good or even better ones cost something.

It sounds to me like the Circuit City guy either didn't know what he was talking about, or wanted you to buy a really expensive Sony, which isn't even a Pocket PC, it's a Palm! Bluetooth does work on the Axim, as well as Wifi.
Sorry I got you so confused with the connecting the Axim to the internet thing. That was me that talked about the circuit data switch. If your phone has an IR port, you can connect through it, but the connection isn't very fast or reliable using a cell phone, especially if you are using hte IR port. Doing a quick search on the AT&T site, it looks like you can connect through them using the mMode service. But I don't know for sure, sorry.
Lastly, games, games games. I use my Axim for games more than anything else. However, I also watch movies, compose emails, and organize my school schedule. For games, I really like using PocketNester to play the old Nintendo games. It really is a blast.

I always laugh when I go to electronics stores, and listen to the sales people try to tell people about their PDA's. They usually shy away from the Pocket PC's (my guess is they know nothing about them), and try to build up how great the Palm Tungsten's are.

Nah, seriousely... don't ever listen to salemen in electronic stores, they NEVER know what they are talking about(except maybe when you're talking about microwave's and Mocca Master's :-))!
I always check out the net, to see what people say and reviews from independent sites say, if I'm looking for mobiles/PDA's/laptops/etc... and buy the brand/model I deside where I find it cheapest.

I should get Consumer Reports. they are supposed to have good reviews, don't they?
But I like to see reviews, of course, here and ZDNet and CNet.
Sometimes people don't have a clue what they are doing. I saw reviews for the Axim on Cnet and they were pretty bad. that lead me to believe that Dell's first PDA stinks. But some Magazines I've read said that it was decent. After awhile, I started to ask people at other stores what makes their PDA's more superior to something like the new Axim back in early December. Some never heard of it and some seem to think they have heard of it but their answers were pretty much off topic trying to get me to buy their PDAs.
I was skeptical about getting the Axim at first with mixed reviews but my instincts told me to trust the Magazine review more than these other people. I'm am so happy I did. :)

Yeah, I have read a bunch of mixed reviews, but the thing that really got me to get the Ax and sell my old Toshiba E310 was that all the GOOD reviews were coming from where it counts, Pocket PC Magazine, Laptop, Handheld Computing. Heck, in Handheld Computer, the Axim was the product of the year for 2002, and it only came out in December! Plus it was up against not only Pocket PC's, but also the Ipod, Palms, Digital Cameras, and so on. So that is what swayed me.
Just to clear something up.....I worked at Circuit City for about 2 years. The only thing that they TRAIN you on, is the STOCK product specs for the units that Circuit City carries....and also specs for ONLY the accessories that Circuit City carries. Therefore, CC employees that do not have a decent tech/IT background usually don't have a clue about these types of questions (i.e. Bluetooth). There were a handful of employees at our store that actually knew about things other than what we sold, including myself. Therefore, it was usually just the few of us that got stuck with most of the hard questions. :)

Deftech nailed it right on the head. I worked 2 years at The Wiz, which WAS a very good competitor to Circuit City in the NY area (Until most of their stores were shut down). They literally would teach newbies the specs right off of the cards that are displayed under the products, basically just asking them to memorize it. I worked there, and it amazed me how little most salespeople knew about the products they sold. I have always been an audio/video freak, and I also got all of the hard questions, but that lead to a managers position rather quickly. See... sometimes being a tech freak can actually make you money, instead of costing you money constantly.;)
Main point... take whatever a salesperson says into consideration (you can tell most of the time if they know what they are talking about), but always do your own research when buying a fairly recent piece of technology.
