Sluggish x51v

Just got my new 624MHz toy from Dell. First impression during first 1-2
weeks of ownership is that it seems very sluggish.

Esp. when I power on, screen update is slow. And not responsive
to my tapping. Check processor speed and find it's already 624MHz.
Did I miss anything here?

How many programs do you have running in the background?

Ah, there's no task manager in WM 5.0, is it? I'd really like to find out
how many background programs running. But my conscious intention
is to run 1 or 2 at a time.

I tried soft reset. Should this kill all background programs? At first (and
even now) this is a bit confusing. Are there any applications that ensure
I close a program properly (e.g. when I click "ok")? Anyhow, after soft
reset, it's still sluggish.

W.r.t. the promotional programs, how would they hurt, if I'm not running
them?

Thanks!

Start > Settings> click systems tab scroll to the bottom window that opens > click on switcher Bar Icon > It will appear on the middle of the bar on the top of the screen > click the icon on the bar and it will show you what is open and allow you to close them.
