Waiting for my 300 to arrive. For peak performace where should I install apps? I ordered a 64 meg cf with it. Will be ussing a database prograam which I want to keep my tables synced with access. What about mp3, jpg, and mpeg files. What type of stuff should be put into the differnet memory storage available?

Hello CalgaryCowboy,
Most of the time you would want to install applications on the main memory, less you have so many apps there just isn't enough room. I put all my audio and video files, games and ebooks on storage card.
Once you get your Axim and start installing applications, you would have a better idea on how to optimize the memory space between main memory and storage cards.

I would differ with drop's suggestion. With only 32 meg of main memory, I'd put programs and data on the CF card to keep main memory for the running programs. The more free main memory available the faster the Ax performs. There is a small penalty in loading time for programs brought to program memory from CF cards, but the downside is well balanced by the increased performance once in program memory with the "headroom" to run.

Thanks Jake. What about ROM. Willl the os use the extra rom space for running apps. If not is it a good idea to use this storage space?

Loading into ROM works great. It's easy to do, and the PPC files are protected so you can't accidently delete them. I just wouldn't put data files or anything that is going to change frequently in ROM. The number of write cycles is limited. It's a big number, but if the data is changing all the time, it starts to add up. If a few cells of a memory card meet with their write cycle limit, it's no big deal. But you don't want this to happen to your ROM.

I want to make sure I have this right. It is a good idea to put apps like sprintdb into rom because it will stay the same right?

ROM or the removable cards is all non-volatile. That means if the batteries totally die, those locations will still hold memory. Main memory, on the other hand, is volatile, which means a battery death will reset the main memory to empty, erasing everything. A hard reset is equivalent to a battery death, so all volatile memory is erased. I put in ROM things I want to have if I have a disaster away from my backup files. The rest I try to store as much on my SD card as I can, and only store in main memory things that simply will not work from the SD Card.
You can install apps to the ROM, but remember that the registry is kept in main memory, so any registry items that the application needs, plus any .dll's that are put in the /windows directory, will be gone if a hard reset occurs. One idea is to put the installation files (.cab files) in ROM. That way if you lose everything you can at least re-install the critical items. Combine that with leaving as much data on the SD card as you can and you can be reasonably prepared for almost anything.
My $.02.

Please, some clarification.
My memory shows :
Main memory (tab) 31.55 - this is RAM and volitile??
Storage Card (tab) Built-in storage 5.62 - this is ROM and non-volitile??
In file explore am I looking at a combination of both RAM and ROM?
Windows, My Documents, Program files? If not, then a hard re-set would wipe out my Windows folder.
I try to put as much as possible on CF card. I loaded PocketTV to "Built-in" storage and it wouldn't function. In main no problem. I will try it from CF card.

Correct.
>Storage Card (tab) Built-in storage 5.62 - this is ROM and non-volitile??
Correct. And note that you can also select your CF card from the box immediately below the memory indicator bar.
>In file explore am I looking at a combination of both RAM and ROM?
Depends on where you're looking. The listing under My Device shows the contents of Main memory (storage RAM). Core files stored in ROM are mainly in the Windows folder and will appear as well. Entries for Built-in Storage and CF Card or SD Card also appear. Opening any of these will show its contents.
