I have a couple of newbie questions for y'all.

I just converted a mp3 to a wma and I'm having problems getting media player(MP) to play the song. Do I have to install any codecs so MP can read the file?

and, I saw a MP update on the Microsoft web site, does that need to be installed? here's the link

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ayerupdate.aspx

thanks for your help....

DO NOT update WMP on the Axim from the Microsoft site. You've got the latest version already, and downgrading WMP can set you up for a hard reset. Bad juju.

That said, some bitrates don't want to play. When I first started encoding WMAs for my Axim, I used the default Pocket PC CD-quality setting in Windows Media Encoder 9, but WMP on the Axim wouldn't play it. I've since encoded WMAs in 48kbps, 44kHz, stereo, bit rate-based VBR, and they play and sound great. Using that method, I got 521MB of MP3s down to 177MB of WMAs, almost 7.5 hours of music.

Hi

I wish I had seen this post earlier i.e. before I downloaded the "update" I was having problems playing wma's at the default ppc bitrate... Now that I have done the baddy (the update doesn't work) is there any way of reinstalling the player from the built in ROM short of a hard reset... I really don't look forward to that!

TIA

Hi NMkid

It doesn't work at all... just says it can't find the skins and then you have to hit cancel... refuses to run at all. I guess I can download 3rd party software to replace the video and sound part but I was looking forward to smaller .wma files. Somewhere in ROM there must be an image of the original one - it sure would be nice to just install that.

TIA

Have you tried to uninstall the update? It might work to take out the offending new files, then the system should be able to see the original ones in ROM again.

Hi

I sort of have a solution... at least it will allow you to keep version 8.0. Go to this page and download a skin http://www.phm.lu/PocketPC/WMPSkins/ and place it in the same subdirectory as the media player. The real answer of course is not to download the player "upgrade" in the first place!

Cheers
