I've downloaded the patch, unzipped the files and ran the set-up executable. It pops up a pretty window showing me how to uninstall the patch. Gee, thanks!
I then follow the instructions posted here and try to move the files to the PDA via the Pocket_PC My Document folder. The AximX5.ini file won't sync over (I get an error), the CAB file won't sync either - though I get no error, and the set-up.exe file syncs but won't run on the device (not a PocketPC file).
Where am I going wrong?
Thanks,

On the PC go to where the files were unzipped and run the .exe file that is there. It should install to the AX. If you can't do that, try copying the .cab file to the Ax, then from the Ax tap on the .cab file to install it. When it's done, the .cab file should be gone.

Executing the "setup.exe" does not move anything to the Axim. When I try to move the CAB file to the Axim (via the Explorer in ActivSync or the Pocket_PC My Documents) I get a quick flash of a dialogue box (can't read it, it's on the sreen off the screen real fast) as if it's moving something, but the file never appears on the Axim.
I checked the file folder settings, thinking that it might be hidden, but it's set to view all files.
Seems like this should be simple enough.
Note: I have successfully loaded other software and transferred files to the Axim.

Hmmm, curious. If you have an SD or CF Card and a reader, you could try copying the .cab file directly to the card, then reinsert the card and tap the icon. If you don't have that path, I'm out of ideas. I tried installing the fix, and it worked exactly as Dell indicated.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but the CAB file shows up as a "Zip" file on my desk top.
The dialogue box that shows up (I got a better look at it) is the file transfer box. So it is moving the CAB file. However, I cannot find it on the PDA. I tried moving it to the CF card to see if that would work, but got the same response.
I don't have a CF reader, so I'll ask one of the other PocketPC folks in the office to try an load it on their PDA and beam it over.
If that fails, I'm off to Dell tech support.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I had no trouble installing this patch but after a few days, I un-installed it. I had gotten used to predding that button to turn the display back on but with the patch installed doing that executed some which was a pain.

Yes, .cab files show up as zip files on the desktop. Have you tried looking at it with winzip? You should be able to see some files in there. The cab extractor does things to the files, so you can't just unzip them and copy them to the Ax, unfortunately, but at least you can verify that the file has stuff in it.
Also, on the Ax, look at the Remove Programs screen to see if it's been installed and you just didn't notice it.
Don't expect much from Dell support. They will suggest a soft reset followed by a hard reset. I think the Dell technicians and my own company technicians all went to the same school of "don't bother, just reformat" troubleshooting.
I'd try downloading the update again and starting over before I called Dell, personally.

Unzipped the file on the desktop and it unzipped fine (3 files in the CAB). Thought the PDA wasn't reading it because I didn't have Zip utility installed on it. Installed the demo Zip program included on the Dell Disk, but it had no impact.
Good to hear that our company isn't the only one that thinks reformatting (or re-platforming as they call it) is the only viable IT solution!
I'll keep plugging away. Thanks!

Well I solved the problem - sort of.
I changed the extension on the CAB file from *.cab to *.zip. Got all the warnings from Windows that I was doing a bad thing. Tried transfering the file with it's new extension and it transferred just fine. Went to the PDA and executed the file and the patch installed properly.
Still not sure why it wouldn't transfer the *.cab file, but I done worrying about it.
