Question Some Questions

Hello all,
I have been researching PDAs for a few months and have finally decided on the Axim. I have just a few questions before I finally buy it. I am going to get the Basic.

- How much usable memory is there? I know that you can put stuff in the RAM and the ROM. How much of the RAM can you use to store things, how much should you leave open? How much of the ROM can you use to put things, what kind of things can you put in the ROM?

- If i get the Basic, it has 32mb of RAM, what is a good sized CF card to get?

- I saw a picture of this Holster case from DSI. Does anyone have it?

- How is plugging/unplugging the cables to it. Would it be better to just get the docking station or is it unneeded?

Thank you all for reading my post and helping me in my quest to getting the Axim.

Here is my opinion:
Don't worry about the ROM, just don't use it. It is called ROM (Read Only Memory) for a reason. Besides a 256 Meg or even the 512 Meg cards are getting cheaper and cheaper all the time.
I load all apps that allow it (some might not) onto a memory card, leaving as much built in RAM available as possible.
I think if you get anything less that 128 Meg, you'll regret it later. Bigger depends on what you end up putting on the cards. I have a 256 Meg SD card, which I plan on moving all my apps to, and data files (like pictures and music) onto a 256 Meg CF card (which I can get more of as I need them.
As for cables I have the cradle at home and I am still using my laptop's IR to sync at work. I'll probably just get a sync cable, since the Axim lasts souch a long time on a single charge.

Hope this helps.

I have a 512 MB CF card, and only have 50 MB or so free now. You will be amazed at how quickly the memory will be used.

I have the DSI holster and love it. It is currently my favorite case.

I have the docking cradle, but since I am using the DSI case, I am now just using a syncing cable, rather than having to take my Axim out of the case. The cradle is pretty, though.

the only thing the ROM can't do is act as RAM for running programs. the name "read-only memory" does NOT mean that once it's written to you can only read it. the built-in storage has a read/write cycle around 100,000. In other words, you should really be taking advantage of this memory. at least save backup files to it. It's not going to die on you or anything.

the ROM contains the operating system, which is why you cannot access all 48MB on the advanced model, or all 32MB on the basic.

The advanced has 21MB left over as "built-in storage," which you can use for whatever you want. the basic probably has like 4 or 5MB.

as for the RAM, the Axim allocates the amount needed for actually running programs automatically, and I've never seen it use more than about 18MB for that purpose. Generally it allocates 32MB for RAM though. basically you can fill up the first 32MB of main memory without taking any away from actual RAM functions, I *think.*

I've got quite a few programs stored on my SD card, plus a few JPG's and a few backup files. I bought a 128Mb card and I'm using about 20Mb now. OTOH there are those people who get into MP3's and need Gigabytes of space.

It looked to me like 128Mb was a good spot- easy to find, not too expensive, etc., so that is what I bought. Unless you want to get real heavy into MP3's I would suggest a 128Mb or 256Mb card. You can do a lot with even a 32Mb or 64Mb card if you find one real cheap. I don't think I would buy a 512Mb or 1Gb card unless I knew I needed it, due to the high cost of those right now.
