My wife surprised me with an Axim for Christmas this year, and since this is the first PDA I've owned, I have a few newbie questions on memory cards and applications for you.

Which type of memory card is the preferred type of card to use with applications? When I install a program onto a memory card, what happens if I turn on my Axim without that particular memory card? Will the program icons remain on the device even though the program is unavailable or are all of those setting stored on that card so none of them will be visible? Since the Pocket PC is essentially Windows, do I run the risk of cluttering the OS over time if I install/uninstall various programs to a memory card? I don't plan on installing any applications (except for the ones I'm looking at below) to the internal memory so that I can have all of the internal memory allocated to system memory.

Also, what are some good programs you recommend for a newbie like me. I'm currently looking at Pocket Plus and Resco Explorer 2003. Are there any other utilities that you might recommend or any utilities that are better than the ones I'm looking at? I don't want to install every demo I can find... actually I want to do this but I'm afraid of cluttering my Pocket PC OS.

This is such a fun toy... I almost forgot how practical this device is too!

I am currently using CF and MMC. I prefer CF for the reason that it is cheaper. But alot of people that want to us CF peripherals (sp?) prefer to use SD.

From my experience, if you turn on the Axim without the memory card, the program will still show up, but the icon will resemble a blank box. It is there, but you cannot run it. You can install and uninstall all you want from my experience. Just watch your temp folder, and erase files, and do a soft reset from time to time. That should take care of any leftover files.

As for programs, sorry I cannot help you there. I am embarrassed to admit that I mostly tend to use mine for a library and an expensive gameboy. Although I do tend to use it to keep up with assignments and tests at the University.

I found Windows Media Player to blow chunks, so I loaded Pocket TV player for vids, and Resco Picture Viewer for graphics.
What's the best for MP3s?
I also got that Today skin designer (for the desktop machine).
Agenda Fusion may be usefull if it ties things together like they say ... but I'd be using job numbers and job names as contacts, so they get connected to calendar and task list entries. I'm just learning how best to use this thing for the way I work.

;) Battery 2003 and ListPro are two that I have really liked. Just about the handiest things ever. They cost a little but I think they give great value for the money. You can get the Battery program on this site. See review link from home page. ListPro is available from Ilium Software.
