Definitions first: The slip off battery is the Main Battery. There is a little coin sized battery for Backup.
When you remove the main battery, the only thing holding memory is the back up battery. That back up battery will NOT run the Axim, it's only there to keep memory alive. Dell estimated that the backup battery would last up to 72 hours. I wouldn't push it nearly that far. Some folks have reported problems with losing memory when removing the main battery, so if you can, I would plug in the power supply before I removed the main battery.
The backup battery is NOT rechargable. It costs about $3 at RadioShack and other fine stores. Should last for years if you don't let the main battery die and if you don't take the main battery off the Ax for very long.
About the only reason to remove the main battery is to swap for a second main battery, so unless you bought two main batteries, it'll never need to come off. My main batteries for my various PPC's never came out until I shipped them somewhere.
