Three weeks wait and two more to go, unless my ship date gets extended again...I realize this is not news to the rest of you, buts it's making me rethink my decision to order from Dell. I'm still fairly convinced the Axim is the best PPC handheld out there, but I need a little reassurance that PPC is the way to go...I started out with a Palm m130 and have enjoyed it - just found the 8meg a little limiting. For the price, Dell made it seem like it was time to move to PPC so I ordered the Axim 300. I'm a little concerned over the relatively small amount of software out there for PPC - I'm a teacher and am always on the lookout for cheap classroom apps, which the Palm OS has plenty of. Also, I'm not sure I'll be able to get by with 32meg in PPC and am not particularly excited about spending at least $80 more to double it. I'd almost rather stay cheap and grab a Palm OS 16meg like the Clie SJ30 or T615. I figure you're the ones to ask when it comes to talking me into the Axim....any help is appreciated...

MarkMeerkat,

I was a Palm user. Matter effect, I am not a Microsoft fan. Even though microsoft technology is what keeps me employeed. I got my Axim PPC for christmas. It took some getting used to over Palm. But I can tell you I will never go back. Right out the box the PPC does 10x more then the Palm. As far as software goes. I have found everything that I have needed and more. This thing has gotten me to do more with a handheld then I orginally planned. THere is so much free software as well, it is surprising. I have never been a fan of Grafiti (as you can tell I can't even spell it). The handwriting recognition is much better. Especially after you get the screen protectors. One major flaw I have found is cost. However, it has so many gadgets you can get that I never seen for mid-lower end Palms. Matter of fact, I have a 615. If you use a microsoft OS you will probably enjoy the compatiablity with the software you already use. And alot of things are similar to the desktop and doesn't take much to learn. I got the biggest kick out of word completion. It really speed up my inputs into the thing. I never seen that for Palm. Not to say it doesn't exists. Also the XScale, in my opinion is overkill for the current PPC. Which meand it will be around for a while if microsoft supports in the next PPC release. Which I heard through the grapevine the 615 won't be upgradable to the next Palm OS.

I think you'll find there are plenty of apps. I've been surfing around and founds tons more than I can ever use. Why not spend that 3 weeks surfing the software reviews and sites? I am sure you'll be very happy with your Ax and PPC. It's so much better than Palm

Thanks Net2k and Quinn; I didn't have to wait long for some good input...Quinn, if you have any software sites to suggest, please let me know. Do either of you have input on the 32mb vs 64, where money is an issue?

Try any of the links on this site. Also Handango and ZDNet (mobile downlopads section). If you've got a Barnes and Noble near you look for an issue of handheld computing, pocket PC magazine or handheld computing. They'll all have software reviews and links and they have web sites (just do a Google search.) Check www.microsoft.com/mobile I think there are some links there as well.

Since you're a teacher you might want to check some of your own bookmarks. I bet some of your education sites have software or links you've never paid attention to since you haven't had a use for them before. If you're on any teacher's mailing lists or newsgroups ask the folks there, I'm sure they'll have some input as well.

As far as which device- Money was an issue for me so I went with the more expensive one, lol. Really. You'll save in the end by not having to buy as much external memory as fast and you'll have more flexibilty in flashing to upgrade the OS when the time comes. I've found that it just doesn't pay in the long run to under-buy if you have any choice at all. That $100 isn't all that much when you figure in the cradle and the extra memory.
