(I posted this on another site today, but thought it should go here too!)
I sync with my work computer as my primary partnership. I also want to sync with my laptop at home so I can occasionally install software. When I first setup this up, I created a second partnership between the laptop and the Axim using a cradle and then relied on wireless syncs between the two. So far so good!
Last week, I received a USB sync/power cable and thought I would try it with my laptop. As soon as I plugged it in, ActiveSync wanted to establish a new connection. Foolishly, I selected another primary partnership. This prompted me to select a new device name since the Axim’s name already existed on the laptop. Unfortunately, instead of just creating a nickname that would be used between these two devices, it actually changes the name of the PDA. The next day, I found that my work computer did not recognize the Axim and it would not sync. Duh! I just realized why so many people hate ActiveSync.
(Round and round it goes...where it stops...no one knows!)
After deleting existing partnerships and establishing a new primary partnership with my work computer, I decided to scout around for information on how partnerships work and what to do when they break.
Since the only reason to sync at home would be to install software, a Guest account is all I really need. Unfortunately, Guest accounts are not permanent and must be renewed with every connection. This requires the Connection Wizard and several prompts to establish the connection. As soon as the devices are disconnected, the Guest account is deleted.
Fortunately, I found a really nice fix over at
http://www.cewindows.net/applications/undo...dactivesync.htm which changes the laptop's registry so that any connection is automatically recognized as a guest device. There is no Connection Wizard, no prompting and no delay. (How sweet it is!)
If you have one or more computers that you need only guest accounts with, get this.
