I'm interested in a modem. storage disks and portable keyboard - are they interchangeable between products or specific to the Axim? Also, what about the transparent screen covers, does another brand fit the Axim screen?

Modems are available from a couple of vendors. You might try computers.com and look for CF Card Modems.

Storage disks - most of us use storage cards, but there are some HDDs in CF format out there. IBM makes a couple in different sizes, and there are other vendors. Again, computers.com and search. If you plan to use wi-fi or bluetooth or even your modem, then you don't want a HDD CF Card, you want a SD/MMC storage card so that the CF slot is free for use.

Portable keyboard - right now the only keyboard is the Dell one. In the future, some other vendor may come up with a version that fits the Dell connector, but for now, it's Dell's.

Screen protectors - WriteSHIELDS will have a Dell size soon. THey are the best. I had a CASIO E-125 one left, cut it down to fit and installed it just fine. They go on bubble free and are very durable. To me it feels like paper to the stylus, so my handwriting gets better.

Jake - do you like the WriteSHIELDs better than Dell's protectors?

Didn't get the Dell protectors. This is my fourth PPC, so I knew I wanted to continue with WriteShields. I prefer the sticky protectors because I worry that a little dust under the non-sticky ones could scratch the screen. With the sticky ones they don't move at all, so there is much less chance of trouble.

The Dell screen protectors are VERY bubbly.

I went ahead and ordered the WriteShields. I hear nothing but rave reviews about them.

Mine is sitting very still and has absolutely no bubbles in it. The contact seems very responsive too.

Not to try to tell you something you already know, but since somebody pointed this out to me before the first board crashed, there's a little protective film on the contact side of the Dell protectors you have to peel off before using. The corners go up, and the easiest way to insert the protector is to slide the top in, use your stylus to hold up the middle (drape it over it) and then insert the bottom of the protector, then slide out the sylus. It worked like a charm for me.

It sort of moved around till I really started playing with the stylus and writing on the Axim, now it's sitting tight and is very clear and is working well.

HTH,
Donna

Boy do I feel stupid. I couldn't get any response using the Dell screen protects. I tried twice to talk to their tech assistance and never reached a human so I gave up. The good news is that Dell credited my account for the cost of the screen protectors and I didn't need to return them. Once I removed the film it seems to work great!

I wonder if Dell realizes how much money they'd make/save if they had just put some instructions in on that little pack of protectors?

Nononono. Nobody's stupid around here. We are all new to the Axim even if some of us knew other PDAs. We are just eager learners!

No question is stupid in the Newbie forum!

Thanks again (Chris, mighty leader) for this place so we can all learn at our own pace!

JakeRich - I read about the WriteShields on other forums and they all agree that WriteShields are the most expensive BUT they are one of the best screen protectors available. Basically they said other screen protectors need to be replaced every month for X dollars, however with the WriteShield, some people haven't had to replace them in 6 months. Is that similar to what you've experienced with the WriteShields on your other 3 PDAs? Also, did you get your Axim WriteShield yet? If so, how easy/difficult is it to install them? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to PDAs.

I'm interested in getting a screen protector for my Axim as well. Does anyone know where on the Dell website they are listed? The only protectors I see from doing a search are for a Palm, made by Belkin.

Please explain...I am probably just a little dense...On the Dell Screen protectors...Do you have the bent corners facing into or aware form teh screen?...Also does the protector adhere to the the screen, or does it just cover it, wiht space behind it?...I am confused...Thanks for any clarification.

The bent corners face up.

The protector doesn't adhere with anything sticky (one of the things I like about that as I do not want to have to be taking residue off the screen down the road). There is a protective film on the protector, on the surface that sits on the screen, once taken off the protector is clear. It slides around for a few minutes, then stops as you use it more and more. I read somewhere that the little microscopic holes in the protector somehow allow air to pass through for a short time and somehow when the air flow stops, it's settled in place. It's almost like a cling decal you put on a window, but it's not soft and pliable. I don't know how it works, but it does. I really like them.

Hope that helps.

Will an infrared keyboard work with the AXIM?

Donna,
I thought those tiny little spots were bumps, not holes. If you look at a protector sheet before the film is removed, it seems to tent the film a tad at each spot. My dell protector is still sliding around after a couple days, sometimes hyper-inserting into the bottom slot and coming out at the top. Your description sounds elegant though.
