Alright,
I've been through the manual, read all the help sections on my PDA, re-installed ActiveSync 2x, but I still can't seem to find how to get my Contacts to create a copy on my desktop. I've already put in about 4 hours on my Contacts, so I REALLY would hate to lose them...........

- when I set up Activesync, I didn't see a box for sync-ing contacts.... (?)
- on activesync/tools/options, I have the USB box checked only
- on the tools/server I don't have anything checked, b/c it gave me a server error
- but I can't seem to create a copy of my contacts on the desktop!!
- and I can't seem to find where the contacts are kept on my PDA file directory

Thanks for helping us newbies maintain our sanity.

-Connect your Axim to your desktop computer.
-Open up ActiveSync.
-Click on the "Options" icon on the top tool bar.
-Click on Syn Options
-check the "contacts" box

Open Activesync on the desktop. Go to Options. Check the boxes beside what you want to sync. Check the Settings for each type to see if what you want is what is going to happen. Click on the Rules tab. Check the rules to make sure it will do what you want.

Now check on OK until you get out. If the Axim is connected, Activesync will restart syncing according to what you just chose.

Jake,
I've done all those things (although "settings" in grayed out for Contacts).
What happens to me is the following:
-Window that says "Network problems are preventing connection to the MS Exchange Server. Contact my admin if this persists"

- I hit OK, then window says: "The action could not be completd"
- I hit OK, then MS Exchange Server window says I must "provide the name of my MS Exchange Server." I'm not using a server, so I hit OK or cancel (same result).
- Then I get a MS Outlook Sync window "Sync cannot be completed b/c my personal info manager (PIM) program cannot be accessed. blah, blah"
- I hit OK and then the Status of Contacts is "Attention required"
- And my PDA is still sync-ing, seemlingly in a loop. :(

Sorry for the verbosity, but I REALLY don't want to lose all my Contacts. I have Outlook 2000 on my desktop. Do I need to have it open, or certain folders set up in ceratin areas for Outlook files? Or do I still have some server box chosen somewhere in my PDA?

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are just trying to make sure that you don't lose your contacts -- or any other files on your AXIM. That is, to make sure that you can recover and reload them to your AXIM if necessary , can I suggest that you purchase a 32-MB or 64 MB CF memory card to use as a "full system" or "database" backup. (select PROGRAMS / DATA BACKUP and backup to CF). I'm suggesting a CF card because (1) it tends to be cheaper, (2) it has a label you can write on, and (3) I'm guessing that most people have an SD card installed with files and programs, while the CF slot is usually used for communications.

Just pop in the card, select BACK UP ALL DATA or BACK UP PIM DATABASES ONLY (and select the ones you want to back up). The backup is extremely quick. Then just pull out the CF card and put it in your drawer until you want to create a new backup or need to restore. I'd suggest doing this periodically, whether you synch to your PC or not.

Thanks for the suggestion, MTB.

I was trying to remain cheap, but if this is the best way, I need to go ahead and CF it.

If anyone else has additional suggestions for helping me fix my sync so I can save the contacts on my desktop, please feel free to!

kevin:

If you don't want to buy the CF card and have the 400Mhz model with the extra storage in ROM you can back up you PIM databse there. The steps are the same as in mtb's message above except select 'built-in' storage instead of backup to CF. The PIM database should fit easily into the unused space. Only problem is when/if a new OS is released that spaced might not be there anymore and then you'd have to find another way. When you store data to the 'built in storage'/ROM you can still get to it after a hard reset or loose all power that would usually clear out your entire RAM. So if you crash out in the field you can do a restore from built-in storage on the scene and get all you PIM info back.

Good suggestion, AximJoe!!
But........... alas, I have the 300Mhz. So I only have 32MB instead of 48MB. Does that mean I don't have enough? I guess that depends on how much space my contacts will take up (same as PIM?).

Also, can't I delete the backup off my ROM if I ever need to?

Again, thanks! That's the suggestions I may have been looking for!

Open Activesync on the desktop. Click on Options. At the bottom of the screen is a Server section. Make sure the box is not checked. Now try syncing again.

Jake,
I already made sure the server box wasn't checked.

Note: if I open up Outlook (2k) on my desktop, it give me the same schpeal...
- window: "Network problems are preventing connection to the MS Exchange Server.
Contact my admin if this persists"
- I hit OK, then window says: "The action could not be completd"
- I hit OK, then MS Exchange Server window says I must "provide the name of my
MS Exchange Server." I'm not using a server, so I hit OK or cancel (same result).
- Then I get a MS Outlook Sync window "Sync cannot be completed b/c my personal
info manager (PIM) program cannot be accessed. blah, blah"
- I hit OK and then the Status of Contacts is "Attention required"
- And my PDA continues to sync, seemlingly in a loop.

How can I tell Outlook to just open up for syncing, & not look for a darned server?

This sounds like what my laptop from work does when it can't logon to the company network from home. Isn't Exchange Server a commercial app?
This machine was locked down by the admins, so I never could change anything.
Here's a wild-ass-guess. Go to add / remove programs an see if there's anything for exchange server. I always thought that this stuff used a script or something to log on to a secure network. If you can kill that, maybe it will work?

Mike C,
thanks for the above and beyond trouble-shooting...........

I resorted to re=intalling outlook, and it seems to have worked. I still get error messages, but at least I can look at my contacts on my desktop, and activesync says "syncrhonized"

I'll consider my issue closed.

Moral? Re-install everything if the first couple suggestions from this forum don't work. To coin a phrase from the PGA commercials, "These guys are good."

Kevin :) :P
