basic newbie question I'm afraid .. how do I transfer an image from my PC and use it as background on the Today page ?

Assuming that you have active sync installed.
Connect your device and you should notice the connection comes active (you'll get sound notifications if this is working). Copy the file to somewhere on your device (my documents maybe?).

Then, Start, Settings, Today. Tick "use this picture as background" and browse to the picture.

I did this on mine and it made it much slower - I think you need to re-size the image so that the pda is not always resizing to display in the background. You'd be best to do this using software on your pc. (Irfanview is a good free one).
