I had similar issues when I got my AXIM. The first thing I did was download Active Sync 3.6;

http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/d...ctivesync36.asp

Next, if you are still having trouble, do a "hard reset", by holding down the power button and the soft reset button at the same time. Unfortunately you will lose any data you have entered. Then place the AXIM in the cradle and it should recognize the AXIM at which point you can set up a new, standard partnership. This worked in my case.

I saw a new post today saying that he had gotten his Ax to connect by deleting the USB driver, then putting the Ax in the cradle and XP found the Ax immediately. If you don' t have other USB devices, that might be worth trying.

Ordered my Axim 5 01/18/03, got it 02/05/03. I also had problems getting it to connect. I run XP home ed. on a Dell Dimension 8200 PC. First Dell techie concluded my Activesync CD was bad (not true). I called back the next night and after an hour & 1/2, the 2nd techie had me try it on my son's older windows 98 computer. It worked fine. He had asked me if I had installed any firewalls. I told him I had Norton Internet security several times. Finally, at the end he read me a list of software. Guess what? Norton internet security was on the list. I disabled it and was able to connect fine.

So, if you call for support on this, have them read you the list of software!

Good luck.
