OK, quick and simple. See the information provided by cageyjames for more in-depth answers.

Last question first. An access point is a radio that supplies wireless connectivity to a network. It usually has an ethernet interface to connect to the network. All of the little roaming devices connect to the AP, which facilitates getting you onto the network. A router is a networking device that handles routing of layer 3 networking protocols. Most home uses for a router involve using it for network address translation between your ISP and your home network, as a multi-port switch, and as a basic firewall. Some routers have APs built into them. These become one all-around networking focus point.

I've already explained how an AP or AP/router work. Adhoc wireless is when you do away with the AP, and just let two or more devices talk wirelessly between themselves. If you have one network card on your pc, and one wireless card, you could allow network sharing through your PC to allow wireless devices access to the internet. (this does include a processing hit on your PC though) Another thing to keep in mind, is that APs usually have a stronger radio than individual cards, allowing for greater range on your mobile devices.

Please rember that this was just a real quick summary, and I'm sure I've left out important points. The above mentioned files will give you a greater understanding of this topic. Good luck.
