I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me with the following problem:

I am able to establish a wireless ad hoc connection between my latop and my Axim where I can ping the wireless nic on my laptop and vice versa. My Axim is assigned a static IP of 192.168.0.25 and my wireless nic on my laptop is assigned 192.168.0.20. However, if I then go and connect the built in 10/100 nic on my laptop to one of the switch ports on my Dlink router (my router is using the same subnet of 192.168.0.X and the router's built in DHCP server assigns IP addresses in the range of 192.168.0.100-199) all of a sudden I can no longer ping the wireless nic on my laptop from my Axim...this doesn't make sense as I can't see how plugging in a wired connection into my laptop can wreak havoc on my wireless ad hoc connection....is there something I'm missing or misconfiguring here? Any suggestions??

Thanks...

It's pretty early in morning here for thinking but-

Your laptop has 2 NICs (wireless and wired.) That means 2 separate MAC addresses. Maybe your're having trouble resolving the second MAC address for some reason. Do you only have 3 computers on your network? If so why don't you try assigning static IP addresses to everything (make sure they are all in the same subnet, check your mask settings.) Those 2 NICs are 2 different addresses as far as the network is concerned so make sure there is no conflict happening there (ie- same IP address or something.)

Yes, if you have two NICs in the laptop that are both being assigned IP addresses in the same subnet, they must both have the same subnet mask. Make sure the mask you manually entered for the wireless adapters (Axim and laptop both) matches the mask being assigned by your DHCP server for the wired adapter.

If i'm understanding you correctly you have your two Wireless nics connected via Adhoc and then you plugin your wired nic and its given an IP. Since you are running in AdHoc without an Access Point your wired NIC has no idea how to connect to the wireless card because the two devices arent bridged, you are in essence running with the same IP range or subnet of 192.168.0.x on two different networks, you have no bridge between the Adhoc Cards and the Wired Nic even though they are in the same subnet, if you follow. If you have WindowsXP you can go ahead and "Bridge" those connections otherwise you'll never be able to ping the wireless nic while plugged into the wired network at the same time as the wired networks IP is getting first priority.

Well...here's a strange new twist: without changing anything on my laptop or Axim, I plugged into my network here at work and it works flawlessly! (BTW, I'm using Winroute which I believe does do the bridging automatically for me?) I ran "ipconfig /all" to see what was different and the only thing I noticed was that the subnet mask of my wired nic on my laptop had 255.255.254.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 when I'm at home. Now another difference is that my wired nic at work is on a different subnet altogether I believe as the IP of my wired nic becomes 10.1.128.X and at home it's 192.168.0.101.

If I can figure out why it works at work but not at home then that will probably lead me to the solution...
