Apologies if this has been discussed before but I'm a little confused about the Built-in Storage on my Axim X5. Is this like having a storage card internally in addition to the 64Mb of RAM? Or is it just a fancy repackaging of what I assign to storage. Also whenever I assign files to the storage area the amount in use never appears to change. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!
Built in storage is what is left of the ROM after your OS is installed. Since the OS doesn't take all of the ROM that you have available, the machine uses the left-overs for storage. The amount you have varies depending on which model of Ax you have (as one has more memory than the other).

Not exactly like an internal card...mainly because if you flash your ROM or do a hard reset, anything you have in built-in memory will be gone (as it is part of the ROM). However, you are correct in saying that if you put a large file there, it will not come out of your main memory storage.
Basically, if you store anything in there, make sure you have a backup of it somewhere else, but otherwise you shouldn't have a problem.

I was told to PUT my backup there because after a hard reset that is all that is left.
Really??
Hmmm....I could be wrong....but logically I would have thought that since the built-in storage was just left over ROM that it would flash just like everything else on a hard reset. Software could take care of separating the two I guess but I wouldn't think that to be the case.
Someone wanna jump in here with a definitive answer? Sorry if I was spreading inaccurate info..........

when i did my upgrades through A03, my built-in memory stayed intact even after the hard resets. i ain't smart enuff to understand it, just know what it did. :p

Built-in memory is not affected by a hard reset. What would be affected is file (icon) associations for sw that you installed to the built-in memory. Once you hard reset, nothing tells the AX the software is there, so you have to go re-define all the associations.

Just to add confirmation to the above - Built-in memory DOES NOT get erased on a hard reset. I put all programs there (except those that "force" to main). I also do my backup there.
just a warning here... Built in memory does stay untouched after a hard reset thats why it is a good place to put backups, BUT it has a limited amount of times you can write onto it, something within 10 000 times.
