Does anyone know if this is out yet? I would like to try to connect my old GPS and use Pocket Streets or another maping program with my Axim...

What I've heard is that a CF card serial adapter is necessary at this time.

1. No serial cable at this time.
2. Lots of rumors about serial cables in January -Dell, SupplyNet, Gomadic, (insert your rumor here).
3. Serial card is only available solution today.

Good info guys.
I was hoping for cheaper than a "Socket CF/Serial Adapter" - $150 for a cable.

Keep those cards and letters coming!

Good deal I can wait for the cable if it is coming soon. I still need to review some of the mapping software. I hear that MS pocket streets 2002 only updates every 15 seconds. Is this the case with the other programs out there?

...Let the endless quest for the serial cable begin!

MS S&T 2003 is out (available at Price-Costco for $14 after $20 mail in rebate) and like the 2001 version updates at 1 sec intervals running 4800 baud (that is connected to a laptop). This can appear slow when you're travelling 60 plus mph, but the maps and ease of use make it a good quick router for me (no tracking ability).

The Street Atlas (v8.0) is GPS capable sw but requires more work to plan trips/routes. Great for tracking recording routes and the GPS updates more frequently depending on your baud rate setting (19,200 for me IIRC). Very nice tracking with a repeating yellow arrow (repeats when updated) marking track.

Mapopolis is currently one of the best GPS mapping systems out there. You can see a review of it and other mapping software at GPSPassion. It is much better than MS Streets and Trips (any year).

Interesting thread. The lack (so far) of native serial support is the only thing holding me back from getting an Axim. Besides GPS, I need serial to talk to/through my Motorola V.60 phone, and to do terminal emulation when talking to switches, routers, and the odd headless Linux box.
I really don't want to buy a serial card, when serial I/O should be native to any handheld device.

I'll be keeping an eye on the situation. As for GPS, Mapopolis looks pretty good, but being in Canada, the map issue rears it's ugly head. What are Canadians using for GPS (I'm in Calgary)

Steve

A lot of them are using mapopolis. There is even a forum in French for our French Canadian neighbors at gpspassion.com!

I just installed Streets&Trips on my notebook, and I'm very impressed. Amazing street level detail!
It can be hacked to update from GPS every second, and other than not being able to upload/download tracks/routes/waypoints, it's pretty good. I'm looking forward to trying pocket streets.
It's amazing that a $50.00 program has more street level detail for Canada, than the $300.00 software from Garmin.

Unfortunately, I have read that PS&T can't be hacked to update more frequently than 15 seconds. So you get stuck with 15 sec updates and no routing, no voice prompts. It will show where you are. The maps are really good, though. I use S&T on my laptop all the time to find new clients in strange cities, and it is really accurate. I used Mapopolis on my previous PPC for directions and driving instructions, and as soon as the serial cables come out for Axim, I'll use it again.
