I am getting my first PDA and I'm not sure on how the wireless internet access is supposed to work. I am getting the AXIM X5 400 mhz w/ Truemobile 1180 802.11b Compact Flash Wireless NetworkCard. How will I go about connecting to get wireless access and what ISP has been providing the best coverarge and price.
Thanks

:o The Wireless CompactFlash Network Card is just that... a network card. It will only let you access networks within ~100ft or so of a wireless Access Point or Router. Typical uses are for home networking, access at work, or at various public "hotspots" where they happen to offer such service, usually for a (ridiculous) fee.

It is not an "internet" card, per se. If the network you're connecting to also connects to the internet, then so will your Axim. But this card will not enable you to surf from anywhere. For that you need a wireless modem and wireless ISP service which, again can be had, but is very pricey. Another method is to connect your Axim to a cell phone, but this can also get expensive if you don't already have the equipment/service.

Here are some guides to help you understand wireless networking:

Hope this helps,

Here are some helpful things to get you going.

If you don't have a DSL or cable connection yet , look into the availability of either of these services in your area (the DSL from your phone company and the cable from your cable provider) and make your choice of service.

You need a modem (DSL or cable). Usually, it comes free with your DSL or cable subscription.

You may either have a desktop PC, a notebook, and your Dell handheld. You can connect any or all of these wirelessly. in which case you need an access point which is a DSL or cable router (you need to buy separate). Not all access points have routing capabilities.

You would then need wireless cards which will allow communication with the router and your different computers - desktop (USB 802.11b card adapter), notebook (PC 802.11b card adapter), and your True Mobile 802.11b CF for your Axim.

Note that there are few number of ways to connect your computers to the DSL or cable in various combinations of wired or wireless. This one assumes all you want are wireless connections.

One important thing is data security because of your always-open DSL or cable connection, and secondly the wireless set-up you have. You would need an effective firewall between the internet and the LAN, and WEP for your data that moves between your computers in your LAN.

getting started

Hi...I have a new Axim 3, and I live and work in a "hot zone". How do I get my Axim to connect to the Internet? What is the information it needs to be able to do this, and how do I give it this info? Thanks

What do you mean by a "Hot Zone"?

Simply because you are able to detect (and possibly connect to) one or more WiFi LANs near you does not mean you should.

It could be considered Theft of Service..........that you are not paying for and may not have permission to use.

My work is a "hot zone". I work at a university and everywhere on campus is "hot". This isn't stealing, is it?

Not if you get any needed authorizations from your university's IT Department, or follow any "Connection Rules" they have instigated.

I'd contact the IT Department for help.
