File management questions, plus!
I have had the Axim for just over a month now and have managed to congest the built-in memory. I did purchase a CF card and have been trying to transfer data from the built-in mem to CF mem. I have installed SplashPhoto and can keep a family album. I finally got the photo files moved, but now the SplashPhoto program is hanging up and will not seek the files from the CF card. Do the photos have to be on the built-in memory in order to run? I have also had MP3 files placed on the Axim. I have been able to transfer these from the built-in mem to the CF mem and have no problems playing the tunes. I have a large batch of MP3 files, but uploading is a headache because the built-in memory available is only 1.6MB out of the 21.24MB. The CF card is practically empty and would rectify this if only I could figure out how to transfer files. Can you run executable programs off the CF card? The Axim manual leaves much to be desired when it comes to providing working knowledge of what looks like a terrific PDA. Thanks in advance for your insight.

A quick definition: Built In Storage is that 20 meg or so in the Advanced Axim that is left over ROM. That memory is slow and not really designed for heavy read/writes, so it shouldn't normally be used for volatile files.

Ok, now to the problems:

Do the photos have to be on the built-in memory in order to run?

No, they don't, but SplashPhoto knows where it last found them, so it's looking there again. I don't know the product, but what I would do would be to COPY the files from BuiltIn to the card, using the same directory for both, and then use SpashPhoto's delete/add function to delete the ones on Built In and add the ones on the card.

The CF card is practically empty and would rectify this if only I could figure out how to transfer files.

Open Activesync on the PC and use Explore to open a window the explore the Axim. Now you can double click the My Pocket PC icon and the entire file structure of the Ax is available, just like any other directory on the PC. That is the single easiest way to copy and move files on the Axim. If you want to do it disconnected, get Total Commander (google for it) and use that to navigate the Axim. TC is a little more complicated and you have to use the small Axim screen, but it does work.

Can you run executable programs off the CF card?

Yes, you can install most software to the CF card, and if it is well behaved it will install nicely. Some programmers assume the program is in Main Storage, and install only there, but most go to the cards nicely. When you install, Activesync will ask if you want to install the program to the default location. Answer NO and then pick the CF card as the destination from the dropdown window that will open up.

Hope that helped.
