Hi all,

at the moment i have a Palm V, but want to buy an Axim X5 as soon as possible B)
In addition, i also want to buy a Wireless LAN Card for the Axim.

My first question is, if it is possible to install programs not only on the internal memory, but
also on SD or Compact Flash cards. Or can you "just" store data on these cards?

This question is important for me, as i don't want to buy the cheaper Basic version and three months
later regret my decision, because i am running out of memory, although i don't think that i will install much additional Software.

The following things are important for me:
- I want to do the typical Outlook stuff (Tasks, Email, Contacts,...),
- manage a few Word and/or Excel documents,
- Internet (with the WLAN Card),
- MP3 and
- i want to upgrade to Pocket PC 2003

I don't think that i will ever watch a movie on the PDA so this is really unimportant for me!

Now the important question ;) : Would the Basic version (300Mhz, 32MB) be enough for me or do i really need the Advanced one?

I know, that i have to make the decision, but a recommendation would be really helpfull for me.

I am completely new in the Pocket PC area, so if i have forgotten some important information which you need to answer my questions or to help me, please ask!

Thank you very much for your help!!

Regards, Sven

BTW: This is really a great forum, which has already answered a lot of questions to me...and i have discovered it today :D

You don't "NEED" the advanced, but it's really not much $$ more once you consider that you get the docking/charging cradle with it...the Basic model doesn't come with the cradle.

The larger RAM is a good thing to have to allow easier running of progs. Store data on the CF/SD cards (like MP3, Wma's, game data, etc).

The larger ROM will allow you to permanently store those programs that you fully intend to keep and save Ram space (also keeps the progs after a hard reset). It gives you lots of room for future OS upgrades as well.

Chris...

I bought the 300 and now wish I had the 400. The reason? The axim is so powerfull I want to do to much on it. I have experimented and found if I run my database app and file in ram it works much faster than on a card. The 64 Ram would come in handy for powerfull apps and when the machine gets older and not state of the art. I would say the 300 is fine for most ussers and the 400j is better for people that want to do everything on the axim. I am trying to turn mine into a moible office.

Don't be so cheap, Sven. :) Go for the 400. You will definitely find more uses for it after you get it than what you can foresee right now. No reason to regret getting the lesser model when the "advanced" is not that much more and, as Chrissss has stated, comes with the extra goodies.

Sven:

I'm in agreement with everyone on this - go for the 400mhz for all the reasons listed.

Sven,

I pondered the same thing you are. I ended up buying the 300. I have been completely satisfied. It does everything you listed and more. But I made my purchase based on cost. If the extra $100 does not mean much to you, go for the 400. Either way you decide to go, you can't go wrong.

The 400 allows you to switch your speed to 200, in order to save battery. When I do so there is a noticeable decrease in response time in opening up new applications, etc. So, I would imagine that the 300 would be (obviously) right in-between the two, and likely still noticeable slower than the 400. No regrets here about going for the 400.

I've installed several games onto my SD card and they work fine, it only takes a couple of seconds longer to load. You can do the Outlook stuff, work on Word and Excel docs, surf the internet wirelessly, and play MP3s on either the basic or advanced models. (I have a 400Mhz model but I played with a 300Mhz also.)

As far as upgrading to Pocket PC 2003, who knows? Microsoft could be nice and make the hardware (ie. processor and memory) requirements the same as Pocket PC 2002 or they could screw every PocketPC user by having steep hardware requirements.

I bought the 400 because I think there will be a major OS update this year (I might want the Flash), and because I wanted the 64M of RAM. But nobody knows the future? The past is that computers get better and ceaper all the time. How long will your Ax last? Maybe it's not worth the extra $100 to you. Sorry, one answer isn't clearly better. But the good news is, with the Ax, which erver way you go, you really can't go wrong.

First, i want to thank you all for your effort to help me!

But there is one more question: does the package include a (at least a cheap) case or
a cover or something like that?...or is it "just" the axim?

Otherwise i will add the leathercase to my order!

Thanks!

Thanks, TSB8C!

I searched the forum and it seems, that the people are not very satisfied with
the cases, which Dell offers. So maybe i will have a look at ebay, as there is still
no german internet shop, where i could buy accessoires for the Axim...ok, to be
honest, the X5 was launched today (in Germany). Hopefully, there will be a few
shops in the near future...

i'd suggest not rushing about the case. i'm sure that there will be quite a few alternatives soon in the market. they are already starting to surface. the one that comes w/ the Ax would do until then
