Question Axim X51 Connecting to WIFI Hotspots

Hello,

I wish to set up my new Axim X51 (520MHz) to access the Internet using WIFI hot spots. However, the instructions in my manual do not coincide with the menus on the Axim. Can somebody please give me step by step instructions on how I can get on the Internet?

I will give you more information. My Axim system says that Wireless and Bluetooth is attended. I have home wireless network system which uses a Netgear router and is protected by a WEP code. I live in the UK and have broadband connection.

When I switch on the Axim’s wireless facility and go to Start/Settings/Connection and pres the Dell WLAN Utility icon I get a row of tabs along the bottom of the screen – Main Site Config Tools Advanced Transmit About. Opening the Site tab I can see my Network name (under SSID) and the Chanel number is the one which my Router uses to connect the network.

Then I get lost as my Dell Manual no longer coincides with the Axim’s menus. If I can learn how to connect at home then I should be able to take similiar action to connect to WIFI hotspots. I can then use my Internet Web Mail to acces e-mail.

Thanks for all suggestions.

After you turn on the WiFi on the Axim, it should find your home network and give you the option to connect and whether you want to use 'The Internet' or 'Work' settings. I usually advise people to choose 'Work.' Then it will ask for the WEP key which you need to enter in hexadecimal format (it will be exactly 10 or 26 characters depending on if you use 64- or 128-bit WEP).

You'll will find a lot more details in the WiFi Guide linked from my signature - especially check out the WM5 Setup and Troubleshooting sections.

Aximsitebluetoothicon WiFi to Bluetooth and back again...

Great handbook, Ike!

My Axim x51v has trouble moving back & forth between Bluetooth and WiFi. I log in via Bluetooth if there is no WiFi available. However, when I have access to WiFi, I opt to use WiFi instead of Bluetooth.

I have no problem connecting to WiFi. The icons show connection, as does the WiFi window in the Connections tab. However, my programs (Opera, mail, IE) try to connect and I get an error message (cannot find...). This problem did not occur until I started using Bluetooth to occasionally connect.

Are there settings unique to programs that set connection priorities? I entered the network settings as listed in Ike's instructions, but I know I must be missing something. Sometimes, if I try several times (like 5), the connection kicks in.

I'll appreciate any helpful input! Thanks in advance,

Sue

Sorry for the slow response. I'm out of the country and have limited web access ATM.

I'm afraid I don't know the exact answer. I suspect it's a problem with the Network Management page settings but I'm not sure how to set it up to switch between BT and WiFi easily.
