I have read the X51V user manual and have been trying to connect to an open wireless connection at the local community center to no avail. I know I am missing something but what I do not know. Can someone explain in simple words how to connect to any WIFI hot spot?
When viewing available networks through the Axim, you will see some have a LOCK symbol, and others do not. The lock symbol indicates that the network has WEP encryption enabled.
Even if no lock symbol shows up, the network could still be secured using WPA.
I haven't looked into it for awhile, but I think WPA networks require the use of a client program, like the Oddessy client.
Ask someone at the community center if the WiFi is secured or not, and if secured, how?

Maximum Dude and Julie,
Thank you very much for the help. I haven't looked at ikehiker's WIFI Guide yet but will in just a minute. I am so used to how simple it was using my laptop at wifi spots that this is definately going to be a learning curve.
If the hotspot is not secure, it should be pretty easy with your pocket pc. Have you been able to get on the hotspot with your computer?

I have no problems with my laptop. I just go into the menus and click on "find wireless connections" and it does the rest. With the Axim I don't know where to look for that feature...if there is one. I know I'm just missing a step somewhere. If anyone can tell me the steps to take...in the proper order...very slowly so my simple brain can absorb it I would be most grateful.

It shouldn't be too difficult. When you enable wifi, your device should alert you to any networks and prompt you to connect. Are you getting these prompts? Also, are you sure you have properly enabled wifi? You should be able to check by going to Start - Settings - Connections (tab) - Dell WLAN Utility. If you believe you are connected, make sure you pick Work instead of Internet when asked how you want to be connected. And of course, check out Ike's excellent wifi guide for more step by step directions.

Gigi,
It's starting to make sense. I wasn't going to the Dell WLAN utliity, I was trying to connect with bluetooth . I will try this out again tomorrow and let you all know if it works. Thanks for typing slowly so I could understand, LOL.
Also why do I want to pick "work" instead of "internet"?

As Ike explains, it, think of "work" as "netWORK". BTW, by default, the hardware button mapped to the wireless function activates both BT and wifi at the same time the first time you use it. However, it then remembers what you used last and only activates that one the next time you turn it on. If you want your hardware button to activate wifi, just activate it manually by going to the WLAN utility, while making sure BT is not also activated at the same time. Then the next time you use your hardware button, it should only activate wifi.
I might be selling a broken X51V in the near future if I don't get this figured out.
I turned on WLAN and it showed the available connections. All of them (3) were unsecured. When I clicked on the one I wanted to use it took me to the set up page asking for all sorts of things; server name, passwords etc. I opened up the other two and got the same message.
I won't be going on the show, Are You Smarter Then A Fifth Grader , because I would definitely loose if they had computer questions.
Back to square one. Maybe I need to get out my old workhorse with technology I can understand, the incredibly fast Commodore 64, LOL.
If the one you are wanting to use is unsecured then you don't need to fill in anything, just click ok.
Or, Tap and hold on the connection you want and select connect.

Box,
Thank you for the information. I have not done that because I thought I needed to fill in the details. I will try tonight and let you all know if I have success.
It was actually several weeks ago, I just haven't had time to update this thread. Once I stopped trying to add information that wasn't needed my axim connected right away with no problems.
