General Memory Questions

I just bought an Axim Basic and am a newbie with PDA's. Regarding memory expansion though I have a few questions:

1) CF versus SD. What are the pros and cons of each? I'm thinking about going wireless in the future - is this something to think about regarding having expansions AND wireless connectivity?

2) I assume the CF cards etc are for also installing programs (forgive me if this is a stupid question)? As in you specify whether you want to install directly to the Axim OR the CF card?

3) What are the response times typically on CF cards? With the bigger capacity does the response time slow, quicken or no diff?

4) I'm thinking about snagging a 512mb CF card (Kingston or Simpletech). Digging around last nite, it seems that the best deals I could find were somewhere around $90 after rebates. Is this about as good a deal as one could expect or do specials come out once in a while on this site, techbargains.com etc that are better?

In an unrelated question - regarding anti-virus on the Axim - if you scan software off the hard drive using Norton 2003 - should this be safe for installing or is it recommended to have a Pocket PC specific anti-virus - is there any weird proprietary viruses that normal anti-virus wouldn't catch?

Thanks - sorry about the long-winded questions. Love my axim so far!

1) the Axim supports CF for I/O and memory; and SD for memory only. So the general concensus is to use SD for memory and CF for wifi.

2) Sure can. But all my memory is on SD. When you install an App through AS it will give you that choice.

3) Larger card tend to often be faster I think... Mainly because of the technology advances required to increase their capacity often has other benefits. Don't quote me on that.

4) Don't know, sorry.

No know PPC viruses in circulation that I've seen. Whether scanning on the PC would be effective or not, I would think NOT, since the executable will be for a different processor set.

I always use Price Watch to look for memory prices. With no rebates involved, I found a 512 MB CF card for $98. However, I was just on Banana PC and found a Toshiba 512 MB CF card for $94, again with no rebate to worry about.

And I install pretty much all of my programs to my CF card, and some to my MMC card.

Thanks for info - it seems the SD cards are substantially more expensive than the CF - especially at the 512mb range which is where I'm looking.

Yep, that's a fair statement.. But the gap is getting smaller. The way that I think about it, the chances of my NEXT PDA having a CF slot is getting smaller every day. So maybe it's better to bite the bullet and invest in the SD now?

Yes, there is a good price difference, which is the reason that I buy CF. I am actually looking at buying a 1 GB CF card now. I found one for around $199. I hope to keep my Axim for quite awhile, so I am not TOO worried about what kind of memory slot my next PDA has. :D I've spent way too much money on this one to worry about a new one. LOL

I'm with Howard2K on this one. First, you'll want the CF slot, if not now, then eventually, for a WIFI card or GPS unit or modem or something. Second, your next PDA won't be able to use CF memory, as likely as not. Although a 512mb SD card may be a dinosaur by then too, what with everyone using the newest 20gb cards ....
