I'm a real newb to actually using my x51 which I've had for a couple of years.
I was wondering if there was a limitation to the size of SD card I could use on the X51 low. I want to put a few movies on it for a couple of cross country flights I will be taking in a few weeks.
If you go onto the My Memory at the following link: Dell Axim X51v Memory Card - SD Card
it states the maximum for the x51v is 2048Mb (2Gb to you or me).
4gb cards will work, but just look out for what type it is when your buying it. Regular sd cards (not sdhc) will work without a driver but there are few out there in 4gb.
SDHC 4gb cards require the driver that is on this site somewhere. There are bigger sdhc cards, but i havent heard of anybody being able to use 100% of space on them.
If u want more than 4gb and want to be safe(<meaning your sure it will work) get a cf card. People have been reporting up to 32gb ones working without any drivers. I have an 8gb and it works nice.

X50 and 51 (incl. V) support a maximum of 4GB on the SD card side, and 2 GB on the CF, under Mobile 5.
Everything above would have to be partitioned, but access to the full amount of capacity is depending on the partitioning software. The technician actually has a X51 himself. He said he had a 8 GB card which he partitioned (2x4 GB), he had full access to both partitions. Then he reinstalled everything, used a different program, and only the 1st partition was accessible.
4GB SD cards are fairly cheap these days. Dell quoted $39 for a ScanDisk with integrated USB port (you can plug the card by itself into any USB port). Just by quickly browsing to the net, I found a Kingston for $24.95.
Hope that helps.
Greetings!

I agree with the 4 gb SD, but I know your can go much higher on the CF side. I personally have had great success with a 4 gb CF, and Spunker88 above reports he has been using an 8 gb CF without any problems.
That all depends on a wide variety of factors. But that wont help me to recover data, get a refund or fix any possible issues if, for whatever reason, it doesn't work properly on my device.
I would always try the card I'm interested in first. And even after that, there's no guarantee that it will work consistently. I rather stay withing the mfg's limits, I can hold them responsible if something wouldn't work right.
At the end, 4GB is quite a bit. I can put approximately 17 movies on it, that should do it for you as well, CALxxx, or are you in a extremely slow plane? LOL
Greetings!

I've been using a 16 GB CF card without any problems. It's nice to have that much space.
I also have an 8 GB SD card. I've experimented quite a bit. The x51v will only recognize 4 GB of the card. I have put more on but the Axim can't access it.

Hey, thanks for the info. It appear I will be safe with the 4g card.
I'll have a bit more than a gig of music along with about 2 gig worth of movies.
Slow plane...good one!
Thanks to everyone for chiming in. I'm looking forward to learning more as I browse the forum. It's already proven to be worth every cent.
