New, VERY novice, Axim x51 purchaser

I've been perusing your forums for bits of knowledge here and there, but I was wondering if someone could lead me to the best forums/updates. I just bought an Axim x51 (not v) from Ebay and I want to optimize its performance. I have not received it yet, but it should be here any day and I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I start to play around with it. I'm pretty computer illiterate, so much of what I've read, I'm not sure I understand to be honest.

1) I'd like to be able to have the device run as stable as possible (i.e. with the most current updates helping it to run smoothly),
2) Good software/applications that don't crash but optimize performance
3) Ability to surf the internet (my school has a pptp secure sign on for the internet...is that the same as a vpn login?---i understand it's a very novice question).
4) Eventually be able to play emulators and the like, but I'm not sure if the entry level and midlevel x51's are ok at that stuff, everything I read has to do with x51v's and x50's.

I've seen several posts that have guides here, but many are a couple years old and seem to be either for the x5 or x50 or the links don't work. However, I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right places and not sure if those guides would work for the x51. I know the information is out there in these forums, I'm just not sure where to look and what would apply to my incoming device.

Thanks for any help you can give, everyone here seems to be extremely knowledgeable. I'm willing to learn!

First - Welcome to Aximsite. As you've already seen, lots of good info and ppl to help answer questions.

I'd suggest going to the X50/X51 forum and go thru the "tips and tricks on setting up your PDA. You'll get lots of opinions on what software to install. You'll need to decide what you want to do with your PDA and search for that topic. IE Surfing the internet. I personally use PIE. However, many other will recommend Opera. A good backup program. I personally use SBP Backup. However, there are other good backup programs.

You can see a lot will be a matter of choice.

Good luck and enjoy your Axim. :approve:

First x51v although faster than 51. It isn't that significant. Had an x5 went to x51v and although I noticed a difference it wasnt much. Not compared to pc differences.

Great to have you here, Mungojerry11. I started out just the way you describe yourself--browsing the site for information and knowing little about computers and the pocket pc. I've learned a lot here over a year and a half.

If you're browsing for software ideas, there are many threads about people's top choices that are interesting. The many MYPDA lists by veteran members were extremely helpful to me. I often looked at Frenchy's because it had links to key tutorials along with good software choices. I often browsed the MYPDA links of the people who posted regularly. They all differ in their choices, but you can get a sense of the uses they have for their axims and the software they like best.

The tutorial "What can I do with my Axim" is something I read many times as I made choices for software:

Enjoy your Axim when it arrives!
